Well, Hello everyone! I finally made it home after my trek back across texas and wonderful delayed flight home. Seems the plane that I was flying on had some problems with the flaps on the previous flight and was escorted in by the fire trucks. We had to wait for the mechanics to work on the plane and then we boarded. I never prayed so hard in my life for that mechanic to be a skilled one! I just knew we were going to crash- and I was thinking, well at least it will be fast, I am sitting at the front of the plane, if it goes down. Needless to say, God bless that airplane mechanic! My time with Dereck was a wonderful wonderful weekend. I cried so hard when he had to go back to base and we said our goodbyes. I was aggravated that two of the three days that he had liberty, he had to go back to base for watch, so we missed out on several hours each day of getting to see him, but I was just as happy to get to see him as much as i did. He left in the middle of the night yesterday 0230 for Boston then a train ride into Groton Ct. I got a call today from a Ct. number but couldnt hear anything but a steady ringing on the other end, and then a disconnect. I hope he calls back soon! I miss him so!!

navyblumom- my husband taught our 6 yr old all of the marching songs, also called Cadences. She has been singing them since we got home! During PIR we were brainstorming names for our next little one due in September and we decided if it's a girl, we will name her Cadence :)

they can be in Civi's inside the barracks...
copied and pasted for all to see...

PHASE I – Must wear their military uniforms at all times outside of their barracks. The sailors can leave the base on liberty with a buddy (never by themselves), must be in
uniform the entire time and must return to the base no later than 2200 (10:00
pm). While in Phase I, the sailors will
muster 2 to 4 times a day. To muster,
basically, means that they gather, in uniform, and take a head count to make
sure all personnel are present and accounted for and is usually performed at
their barracks. Phase I is normally for
approximately 2 weeks.

Military pays for anywhere they have orders to go...

Ozmom,
the military will pay for travel to duty stations but your son may choose to travel a more expensive way and will have to pay the difference. He may have to pay upfront but will be reimbursed. At least that is the way it used to be and I would imagine that it is still that way.
Moving expenses are also paid. Married with dependents get more money, higher ranking personnel get more money than lower ranking sailors/soldiers. They may pay upfront but will be reimbursed after the move.
Vacation travel is paid by the person and there is no reimbursement.

I am very confused about what they have learned at boot camp. This is basic military information and should have been taught. Sorry about saying that, I know that there are a few on here that think I shouldn't be critical about this stuff but it is true. I mean this is important and if you don't know what is going on there will be confusion, just like now. Parents, spouses, and dependents don't understand what is going on with their new sailor.

There are some really good self help books that talk about what dependents are entitled to and I advise them to parents to read as well, that way you know what your military member is going to get as far as monetary help and what to expect. Most of the information applies to all service members. One that comes to mind that I have read more than once is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Life as a Military Spouse", by Lissa McGrath. I borrowed it from my local library so maybe you can too. This book has a ton of information about benefits and what to expect.
