Cudawn, that was probably the best investment you could have made for your son dont you think? We are so consumed about hearing from our young men, what better way to keep in touch? Too bad he couldnt have brought it with him to boot camp.

Monica, I dont think its a bad thing to not bring your daughter. I have a 14 yr old son that I wont be bringing. I will be bringing my 17 yr old son and Derecks girlfriend. The only reason I am bringing my 17 yr old is because he is considering joining the military and I think it would be a good experience for him.

Sign up for the rewards cards at your airline, rental car, and hotel's website. You can collect points for free hotel rooms and plane tickets in the future. Military can collect airline miles and hotel points even if the military pays. Save all boarding passes because you can add miles sometimes up to 6 months later. Some airlines are networked like Star Alliance so you use one rewards program like Continental Onepass for other airlines on the same network such as United Airlines, ANA, US Express, etc. Plan on either visiting your sailor or paying his way home visits in the future.

Regina, dont take it too personal that he didnt mention you. Derrick may just want to encourage Phillip to change his life around by joining the military when he gets out of jail. They dont have much time to write, he cant cover all bases. Keep your chin up, He will probably say more to you in the next letter. I guarantee when he graduates, he will be a changed person and truly appreciate everything you have done for him.

Got home last night excited that we finally got a letter from Derrick. The letter was addressed to his dad and no mention of me. Really hurt my feelings. The only reference was that he "finally learned to keep the smart comments to himself like some people told him to do." He wrote a whole paragraph about his 21 yoa brother who is jail on 3 counts for selling dope. Derrick wants Phillip to write him from jail and for their dad to visit Phillip. Phillip has stolen Derrick's car, his cell phone, money, you name it but Derrick wants him to write him. I worked all New Years weekend getting everything ready for a big send off party. I did all that work and he can't even say hi to me in a letter. I'm reallly bummed about this. I've been his step-mom for six years but help take care of him for 13. I got all kinds of letters from my 2 sons when they were in basic. Am I blowing this out of proportion?

I booked 6 round trip flights from dallas to milwaukee, 2 double rooms at the ramada waukegan, and rental car for 320.00 per person thru cheaptickets.com. I plan on bringing my other children even though not all of us can attend PIR. They will still get to see my son for the weekend. I plan on giving my son a laptop as a gift. That way when he is at A school he can still stay in contact.
