Colleen you are right about that one, but gosh it would still be nice! Lord knows I am not about to have another child at this point, so I guess all I get to do is wait! I think I would actually strangle them if they even thought about having babies yet. In all actuality, they are very responsible and wouldnt dream of doing it all in the wrong order! Guess I gotta get them married first. Back to step one- who do I ask permission???? lol

Navybum no sweat hon! Colleen's son is the AO (Ricks a PR parachutte rigger aka safety man on aircrew)she was asking the difference between AWAT and AO. And yes my pop was an AO. TOTALLY agree with the navy being a family. We were stationed in Bermuda almost 28 years ago and my dads CO is still my "uncle" and his wife is still my "aunt" he's dying of cancer and she is almost 70. I drive up to Chattanooga pretty regular for dinner and what not to see her. Uncle Gary was actually standing beside John McCain when the explosion on the USS Kitty Hawk happened.
My grandfather was a Navy man and he was at Pearl Harbor Dec 7 1941. He lived to tell about it and to raise 5 children by himself!
My dads brother Dave retired just one rank below my dad as Sr Chief 23 1/2 years in...
We all still have our adopted family members such as Gary and Judy from way back when. When your away from your family... the people you are stationed with become the people you depend on especially the active duty members because they share the comradary and the responsibility of keeping each other alive. Good feeling to know your not in this alone.

Okay AO is his rate Aviation Ordinance. (Thats what my dad was! Welcome to the family!! LOL) I would say all or most Airmen have to take AWAT and its just a class not a rate. I'm not sure what the class entails. I would assume it is to familiarize them with all the different Navy planes and their functions. Don't quote me on that part though. Rick actually started today so I'll let you know what he says tonight after he calls.

Ok, so I am not bored, just reading through all the stuff you can do around here.

This is a link to a MWR page for young single sailors that are down here and don't have anything to do. There is a link to their monthly calender for both NAS P-cola and Corry. They have outings and activities, looks like fun. I remember doing this in Germany and getting to go to Munich.

Ah, I would say yeah to Corry Station too. My wife is on NAS Pensacola, so I think you could say the one on the beach. I had the chance to drive to Corry Station and I drove around it today.

My opinion and my opinion only. The area right around Corry is ok. Typical area close to a military installation in the states. If you go a little further towards the main drag that goes into NAS P-cola the area is a little less desirable in my honest opinion. It looks run down. I was over there looking at apartments. The complex right outside Corry Station's east gate was fine, but the complex 1 mile or so away was a no-go. I pulled into the neighborhood and then into the complex and immediately turned around and didn't even bother getting out to ask questions.

At the complex right outside Corry there were sailors coming back from WalMart I assume because they had shopping bags in hand. So it isn't too far from some shopping, but the nice mall is across town, about 20-30 minutes by car. I assume since the sailors were walking they felt comfortable walking to get stuff but I wouldn't want my wife walking around there by herself.

Just remember, if your sailor plans on purchasing a vehicle he/she is required to get permission to sign the loan from their commander. It is protection to be sure the terms of the loan are not sub-par. They were told this in their financial class.

This is all my opinion and I think you know your sailor better than anybody else, so you know if they can handle the responsibility of a car or not. I am just going off my own observations of being here since my wife got here. I wish I could leave her her car but I need it to get back to Iowa. It will help them stay mobile and see the sites and go places. If they don't plan on doing anything while stationed down here they really could get by without it. On Corry Station there is the main NEX, the Commissary, and everything they need to get by.

Moms, well after just spending time down here with my wife I can tell you. They need wheels. If you want them to get away from the base to see stuff and go beyond the less desirable parts of town they definitely need transportation to get away. I wouldn't feel comfortable not getting my wife her car. Now remember, they still need a liberty buddy when they sign out from what I understand, still a little confused about all that, but if they have their liberty buddy with them (which they are supposed to when they leave the area) then they will be fine. But wheels is much needed down here in my opinion.
