Pattyb - As soon as PIR is over your sailor will tell you how much liberty he or she has.  Sad to say for our sailor, for PIR 5/13, we had to have him back to the Base no later than 7 pm.  We actually got him back to the Base by 6:20 p.m.  He had to walk to the far reaches to get to his compartment and we didn't want him being late.

PIR ends at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time.  By the time we left the Base, it was about 11:30 a.m.  So we had roughly 7 hrs. with him before we took him back.  The next morning we met him at the airport and stayed with him for about 1 1/2 hrs. before he had to board the plane.

Each Sailor's departure is different.  If yours is a Saturday departure, your time may be spent at the airport.  You can get a gate pass to be with them at the airline ticket counter.  If your Sailor is staying in GL, your time may be a bit longer, but again, your Sailor will know all that.

Hope this helps!

Hi Everyone,

We are going to my sons PIR 6/3 and he wants to go out for a big greasy burger!  any reccommendation for Waukegan?  GL?

WandaG....she will either get her orders a few weeks from her PIR or they can wait and give them their orders when they get to A school.  I had a niece that got them in BC and a nephew that got his while he was at A school.

Thanks gnomesweetgnome! Can't wait for PIR!

Does anyone know if the sailor's get orders for their A School once bootcamp wraps up? I'm handling my daughter's student loans and they want orders for her A School so we can apply for an in-school deferment. They won't do a military deferment until she gets orders for her first duty assignment.

Even though my sailor is now in A School, I'll still be visiting this group.  I love to hear PIR stories and hopefully stay in touch with many of you.  Good Luck to all you newer moms and dads as you anticipate your SR's PIR.  It was an awesome experience that I wish I could do over again, just for the thrill of it all!
