HizproudMama, how are you getting to the RTC for PIR? There are shuttles or taxis from the hotel and back from the RTC and the Metra is across the street. A rental car gives you more freedom than relying on public transportation. You can also check in your PIR group and see about riding with someone else who is staying at the same hotel and has room for you and your Sailor in their vehicle. Yes, he will have Liberty and will be able to leave the RTC--and will want to. You will also want to meet him at the airport and spend time with him. (See Saving Money PIR Weekend and PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend.)

Bobbo, he leaves for Gulfport the next day 4 May so Im told. So I'm not even sure we'll even be able to leave base. If it's just for lunch at the NEX , Im ok with that. Guess we'll see what's nearby and go from there.

1proudmama, there isn't really all that much to see on base. It is pretty much all restricted. You have the hall where they graduate, the Nex (Navy Exchange) and that's about it. A little more but you can't go see the barracks or any of the other things like BS 21. We, and it looked like everyone else, got out AQAP. Renting a car gives freedom and quickness. If you don't have much time, then rent a car and go do something for the time you have. When does your sailor leave?

I was told there's no transportation on base, just to the Visitor Center. I'm rethinking how we're going to get around after his graduation if this is true. Is this a bad idea to not get a rental car?  My recruit will be flying to MS for his A School, so we won't have a three day ''staycation'' in IL. Any suggestions??? Thanks !

Hayden's mom, Carrie and SheilaD thank you all for your words of encouragement. I can't say it enough. I am so glad I joined this site.
SheilaD, I'm already writing letters. I now keep a notebook next to my bed.
I do pray very often for all of Our SR. Prayer helps.

Mar'cell2 mom- he's there, he's safe, but even he's not sure if he still wants to be there! The Navy lets them know right from the start that it's not about them - it's about the Navy. His division, his shipmmates and the mission will all become more important over these next few weeks. He will become very proud of how he can help his division advance and succeed, and he won't let a tough CO beat him down. Write to him every day, send him news from home, that you are so proud of him, etc.they LOVE mail! (plain envelopes- no stickers or perfume). I kept stamps and a pad of plain writing paper, and I wrote to my son all day, whenever I got a moment.
Soon you'll get all his personal things in a box (kinda sad)- but he's in the process of becoming part of his new 'family' and he needs your support to get through it! You'll get a short note soon and then rhe 8 weeks begin to fly along. A few more phone calls, then the 'I'm a sailor' call after Battle Stations and you're crying at his PIR! Enjoy the rollercoaster! Pray all the way through, too!

I finally got the I made it phone call @ 2:26 est this morning. I was happy to hear his voice, but, didn't like the sound of it. He sounded tired and upset. The moment I hung up, I was a mess. It was so bad that I got out of bed and looked @ my car in the garage, saying to myself, I'm going to go get my baby. It took a moment for me to realize, that would be impossible. I've only went to sleep for maybe an hour. I remember crying, praying and constantly saying his name..

Congratulations to those who have new Sailors and are at the RTC for PIR tomorrow. Enjoy your time with your new Sailor. If you are able to adopt a Sailor who is alone for the day, please do so.

My baby is on the plane headed to Chicago at this very moment. He says, there are five boys in his group and they all were really cool. It was very hard to maintain a calm composure but, I did. It felt really good to here that everyone in his group was getting along. Once our conversation ended I let it all out(crying). I'm now preparing dinner for my daughter and I for the first time and I'm definitely not use to cooking in small portions. At 19 my son really puts it down.
