yelomoon my son's QM schooling was A school in Great Lakes. He is now in Virginia for combat training for where he will be stationed. So as far as my son's experience showed, A school is the QM training.
Is quartermasters school post A school?
Here to support my nephew. PIR date 9/22
Are there any moms here that have Sailors graduating QM school this Friday July 21st? Are any of your Sailors heading off to Japan after their leave? I'm trying to see if there are any Sailors that might be on my daughter's flight on August 6th to Japan.
HI summer_girl you are very welcome!! And I'm glad to hear that your son started studying the stuff in the DEP book, it's really important, they have like 4 big written tests in BC and if he starts now memorizing it will be so much easier, when my daughter was getting ready to study I told her to break things down and put them on Index cards so studying would be easier, especially the 11 orders of sentry. Make a flash card for each order and then also if he needs to break down the Sailors creed and put maybe 2 sentences at a time on one card, and number them in order, my daughter graduated High School two years ago in 2015 and she had a really hard time in school academically so I always told her break down everything you need to memorize into smaller pieces and do just a little bit at a time, I am an Immigration Officer with USCIS and when I was interviewing people for US citizenship I showed them this tip for studying and memorizing the 100 History/civics questions, and explained to them that instead of sitting down everynight with 100 questions to just focuse on 3 or 5 questions a night for no more than 20 minutes. So this works, when you have to memorize a lot of information breaking it down little by little and focusing on just a few items at a time is much less overwhelming.
If your son has any other questions about A school at Great Lakes, just let me know. My daughter graduates on July 20th next week and then after a few days of leave she will be off to Japan for almost 5 years.
HI tpadul - thank you so much for all of the information. I shared your response with my son and afterward, he studied his DEP book for over an hour!
Hi summer_girl there really isn't anything online that I am aware of to help him study ahead of time for QM classes, but my daughter never really looked before hand. She is finishing up her QM classes and will graduate next week, they get all the needed study materials once they get to A school and start classes, there must be some intranet sites that they can log into on their laptops to study from because my daughter said that she goes online to study extra stuff so I think they have an intranet site set up for them. The QM classes are not really all that difficult and they have several tests sometimes 2 a week, but at least one test a week so the material they are studying is not weeks worth at one time. Its very manageable
My suggestions for your son is to focus on the things that the recruiters showed them in their DEP book that they have to memorize because those tests during Boot Camp seem to be more difficult than the QM classes that my daughter is doing now. Make sure he spends this time now focusing on what he needs to know for the big tests they have in Boot Camp. He needs to have the Sailors Creed memorized and be able to memorize all 11 Orders of a Sentry, and then they have to memorize information about the different kind of ships and the ranks. There is actually quite a bit they need to know during BC and the stress of trying to memorize and learn for those BC tests is more difficult than once they are out of BC and in A school because during BC they are already stressed out with the rigors of BC and emotionally the no contact with family gets to them, the yelling that happens, the punishments when others goof off in their Division, and worrying about passing the physical testing and the swimming puts added stress on all of them so when they also have to study for those written tests it can be challenging. My daughter had PIR on April 21st, and then was on hold for classes at GL for QM school for an entire month before she really started. They wait sometimes weeks before they class up because so many others are waiting. The classes are small and by the time he graduates BC and goes over to the A school side for QM training there will be several other QM's waiting as well and then those waiting longer than him will get into classes first and they also go down the list by last name, so for my daughter, her friends with last names at the beginning of the Alphabet got started with their QM classes a few weeks before she did. So at that time while he is waiting to class up and start class, honestly very few of them ever start QM classes immediately upon arriving at the A school side, he will have time to meet other QM's in his ship/barracks and they will also have their class notes to kind of show him what the material is like and he will most likely be in a room with 3 other roommates and I think they will all be QM's or either OS (Operations Specialists) but the building he will probably be in for his sleeping quarters will be the USS New Jersey, it is right across the street from the building where they have the QM and OS classes. He will have plenty of time while he is waiting to class up to talk to other QM's that are already in class and they can give him tips and pointers about the classes.
I hope all this information helped out. :-)
If you have any other questions let me know.
Hello everyone - my son is in DEPs, so is not leaving for boot camp until November and then going straight into Great Lakes A school for his assigned job of Quartermaster. I was wondering if anyone knew of any books or other material he could review that would prepare him for school, since he has some time. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!
I understand orders can be confusing to read. My son just had PIR this past Friday 3/31/17 and said that his QM orders stated graduation would be the in the first full week of June-if he is understanding what he is reading-he wasn't sure. He is currently on a 12 day hold ( I believe that is the correct terminology) until the class is ready to start. I did the math and it doesn't seem right, would anyone have information regarding this type of situation.
HI Cugemini!! I hope your get your call this weekend! I guess they can't all make calls the same weekend because there are so many of them in that graduation group, so I hope your call comes this weekend. I hope I get a letter soon, but being able to talk to her made up for not getting anything, so I just keep sending her letters to her everyday. What Division is your son in? My daughter is in 125
