Hi all.  Just wanted to reach out and say hi to everyone.  My daughter completed her initial NROTC Orientation at Villanova last Wednesday.  Now she will be in a training company until she joins the rest of the battalion Oct. 1st.  All things Navy and Marine Corps are rather new to her (my husband and I were in the Navy but were out before she was born).

I'm happy to have found this site!  Any advice on how best to support a midshipman during the NROTC/college years?  Anyone have a midshipman go through the Villanova Program?

Thank you!

Hi there!   My daughter is a senior at Wisconsin in NROTC.....I can't believe how fast it went.

She had a really hard time her freshman year and wanted to quit many times but now she loves it and has met so many friends.  My advice is just listen....I always told her no one would be disappointed if she quit etc but she started looking at it a semester at a time instead of 4 years and that seem to help....Now she knows it's the life she wants and loves!!

Thank you so much for the helpful advice!  Can't wait until she is through the training company and integrated into the battalion.  I think she will eventually end up really enjoying her experience too.

Great advice by "June4th".

Congratulations to your daughter, Fran.

My daughter is a 2nd class MDN at RPI.  She completed her enlisted cruise this summer and had nothing less than a fabulous experience.  However, similar to June4th's daughter, mine also faced some challenges earlier in the program.  I've told my daughter that  graduating and earning her commission would be great and worthy of celebration, but if she has to change course, we will not love her any less and it does not equate to failure.  NROTC is a great program and your daughter will learn a great deal about herself, regardless of how far she goes.  However, Godspeed to her and I wish her much success.

I've heard good things about ROTC at Villanova.  My daughter has a friend there, whom she met through NROTC.

Cheers.

Congratulations to your daughter too, and thank you so much for the support, advice, and encouragement:)

Hi Fran, welcome! I agree with the other comment. Help her focus on one semester at a time, and be there to support and listen when things get rough, but also to help her put things in perspective...it is ALWAYS helpful if we moms don't freak out when things get challenging!

Our son just graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic in Troy, NY. He was very active in the Color Guard all four years, and since we live in Maryland, we spent a delightful Saturday at Villanova every spring watching him compete at Nova's Military Excellence Competition. Villanova was his second choice, and we just loved the campus there. Enjoy this time, it goes very quickly!

Congratulations to your son!  RPI is right down the road from us - we live in Saratoga Springs, NY.  It really is a small world, isn't it?  We, too, love the Villanova Campus.  A friend of mine has a son in the Nova Unit, but because he is a sophomore, my daughter is not supposed to be talking to him during this training time.  We all are hoping things ease up a bit after this training company evolution ends Oct. 1st:)  The mental challenges are just as hard or harder for her than the physical ones.  Thank you for contacting me, and Fair Winds and Following Seas to your son!

I forgot to mention we also lived in Maryland two different times.  We lived in Bowie from 1999-2001 and Chesapeake Beach from 2004-2006.  Beautiful state:)

Hi Fran-

Welcome to the wonderful world of NROTC :)   There are a lot of really great and helpful moms on here so don't be afraid to ask when you have questions.   That first year is full of some big ups and downs.  We didn't understand so much, my daughter didn't understand much yet and ROTC seemed to fall in this gap somewhere between Officers and Enlisted .  It was hard to find a good place to get information.

Welcome to the group :)

Thank you!:)

Thank you!  I am happy to be here and will pass information about the site onto other NROTC mothers when I see them:)

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom!  My daughter is studying Environmental Science at Villanova.  It's a relatively new program there (they just graduated their first class with that major), but she will come out with a B.S., and she is very excited about the curriculum.

Right now she is definitely getting adjusted to the whole college and NROTC scenes.  She attended a very small high school (30 some in her graduating class).  She is our first to go to college.  We have two other children at home (16 year old son, 12 year old daughter).  It just is strange not having her or her friends around the house.

I will definitely keep everyone posted on her progress.  Looking forward to attending her swearing into the whole battalion during a Fall Review Oct. 1st:)

Congratulations to your daughter too!  Very exciting - what is her billet on the Destroyer?

Just got a text from her that I have to respond to.  Thank you again for all of your kindness.

Hi Fran, I just found this site and read your note. My son is also in his freshman year at Villanova in the NROTC. We may have chatted at the field meet. :) they are 2 weeks down and only 4 left to go!
