Chons mom... check out the Molly's Adopt a Sailor Group on Navy 4 moms... every month we adopt a different deployed unit to send some love to! Last month it was sending a luau party to the USS Crommelin and this month sending a Tailgate party to a Navy unit in Guam. We pick a theme to add to the fun of packing boxes... Some months I send boxes and other months when the finances won't allow that I send cards and letters! Those are the most valuable thing we can ever send our deployed sailors!

Carolyn, I am so deeply touched by your brother's generous offer. To leave NYC, pick up Sharon's son in New Jersey and drive him back to NYC/JFK on a Friday night. WOW. If he is ever in the San Francisco/San Jose area, we will treat him like a king.

I spoke with Sharon last night. She has been having trouble with the private messaging and possibly the N4M site on her computer. Here's what I know:
Her son has three bags to lug around. He has tickets with United that leave JFK at 6:00 AM on Saturday. On Friday, he plans to drive his car from Ballston Spa to New Jersey for shipping. He plans to stay overnight at the USO. She thought be the time he finishes with dropping the car off, it would be dark. I thought using public transportation with carrying three bags would be difficult, particularly for someone who has never done it before. Maybe he can UPS the contents of one or two of the bags and go with Nancy's recommendation. It's currently 6:59 AM Pacific Standard Time. I will be away from the computer for an hour or so but will check in mid morning and call her at home, if she does get on the computer by then. I know - going from New Jersey into NYC will be something on Friday night.

On taxi - ask what the fare will be BEFORE he get into the taxi. Take down the number of the cab. Our sailor drove from Groton to New Jersey, then took a flight out of Newark. I don't remember how he got to the airport from the car shipping place.
You can also tried googling limo airport service in New Jersey. I know a decent one out of Long Island - but none out of New Jersey.

Sharon, how excited you must be.
During the two years that he was in NY, our younger son (not the sailor) flew home a dozen times. Most of the time, we use Continental out of Newark. From quick check on airfair for September 18th
1. Continental, one way from Newark (EWR) to San Francisco (SFO) nonstop $624 (11:15 am/3:10 PM/5:45 PM/7:30 PM), with stops $473 + (various times). From JFK with stops $919+
2. Jet Blue, one way from JFK to SFO nonstop $409 (8:35 AM), $249 (6:30 PM)
Jet Blue, one way from JFK to SJC nonstop $249 (5:50 PM)

From Hudson Valley, our son took to Amtrak train to NYC, then went to Grand Central Station and got on the subway to Newark (or JFK).
Since your son is dropping off a car in New Jersey, find out if there is a subway to Newark. If not, then Amtrak train to NYC, then pick up subway to JFK (or Newark Airport). I am sure this is the same place that handle the shipping of our sailor's car to Hawaii.
If he is staying at a hotel, most hotel have airport shuttle service, ask concierge if anyone is going to airport.
Maybe the names from Susan mom to Niko will come up with other suggestions.

Don's Mom...you can also get a video of the graduation. Hopefully something will work out where at least someone from your family will be able to attend.

Hey all! Lots of new moms here! That is great! HOW THE RESCUE LIST WORKS,,, When a sailor is in need they (or more likely their mom) posts the need on this page... I and a couple of others check the page throughout the day and evening. When a need is identified in an area... we call the moms closest in location to the sailor with the sailors contact info. Then the mom can contact the sailor and offer what help is needed. Your info is not given out.

If you would like to be added to the list... Send me a friend request, then you can send a private message to me. Include your name, location and phone number... there is always room for more willing and able moms and more on the list! Thanks for volunteering!
