My daughter will be attending "A"School in Meridian after her PIR 11/21/2012.  I was just wondering if the base closes down and they get to come home for Christmas Break?

Hello! They don't have class at christmas time but they do however still have duty, base does not close. She would need to put in leave chit for christmas in the reasonable amount of time for that so that hopefully she will not be assigned duty. And she will have to pay for her round trip back to base.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the info.  It helps so much! :)

Your welcome! Just let me know if you need to know anything else and I will be glad to share.

My son PIR is 12/21/12 and I was wondering if he will go straight to A school or will he get leave?  Since its during the holidays, I didn't know if they would still have training or just have them do stuff around the base.  Thanks!

They usually go straight to A school! But once he gets to A school is a different subject, they are not as strict. Where is your son going to A school at??

He is going to Meridian, MS.  I have heard so many comments about, "he gets leave", "he doesn't get leave".  I also heard that if he does get leave, it will mean he has to take his vacation time.   I get my hopes up that he will come home but than if he doesn't, I don't want to be disappointed. I guess I will wait for the last phone call before PIR and than I will know for sure.

Thanks navyboy!!

It is tough!! I have learned that not everyone's experience with there SR is the same. And the best way to know for sure is to wait for your SR to tell you. But the transition from BC to A school is pretty typical. Most of my knowledge is what its like once he's in Meridian. I would say he's already missed out on putting leave chit in for Thanksgiving. So as soon as he gets to Meridian to put his leave chit in for Christmas. Now remember the base does not close for the holidays! So your SR will still have pt, muster and watch if he doesn't leave for the holiday. They have a lot of freedom in Meridian if they are on the rite phase. Good luck!

Ok i know the base doesnt close down but donthey still have class. How does that work with classes when some are on leave

No they do not have class! Class should resume after everyone gets back from their holiday leave. If your SR left the base for holiday leave they got a break from everything. If the SR is still on base for holiday they do everything they normally do except class.

My sailor called Wednesday night.  He has liberty/leave from 4:30 pm on Dec. 21 until 4:30 pm on Dec. 28th.  His PIR was November 30th. Can't wait to get him home!  Our biggest problem was that flights from Jackson (which is the closest airport) take 14-20 hours to get to Florida.  They fly so many different places and directions. Airline prices are also insanely high for the holidays.
