Carrie, I took my daughter 1 outfit, 2 pjs a pack of socks and undies to the airport. she was able to fit them in her black backpack. She wanted her cell phone and laptop also. They wont be able to wear civilian clothes til about 4-5 weeks in depending on how fast the class phases up and if there are any set backs.

NavyMomT My daughter has been there since 8/29 she wasnt allowed to leave base. She started class about 10 days after being there then about 3 weeks after class started they classed up and got off base liberty. so for the first 2-3 weeks its all on base. You can visit them on base but they will not be allowed to ride with you. We went and visited her and we went to the bowling alley on base, and she and her lil brother walked 7miles cause she got on the wrong bus, and met us on the other side of base. We went to there shopping center. Grabbed a bite to eat. After she classed up and got off base liberty we went every other weekend since we only live 2 1/2 hours away. When they are able to get off base liberty they will have to take a cab and meet you where ever you decide to go because again they can not ride with you. Putting in a chit for them to never gets approved. My daughter graduates next Friday. Just fyi Lackland is a huge base lol. They do have a hotel on base close to the Sailor barricks. Its called Gateway INN on Lackland.

He has to be able to carry everything on his own.

Carrie, he will have his black backpack, his duffel bag, and a garment bag. He will most likely use his black backpack as his carry on. Check Break down week by week for things that he will need right away. Don't put in many clothes since he can't wear civilian clothes other than underwear and to sleep in until later on and often the new Sailor has changed size during BC.

Thanks for the link Lemonelephant - my son has a carry-on bag that I have which he packed prior to going to boot camp and wanted me to bring with me so that he can get his stuff at the airport.  I noticed that it recommends not to bring a bag - what will he be carrying already with him following boot camp (how many bags already)?  Just wondering if he will be able to do a carry on like he planned.

Carrie, yes, he will fly out the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend. Plan to leave late Saturday or on Sunday so you can spend time with him at the airport and give him his cell phone and other things he will want right away.

my son recently informed that his A school is scheduled to begin on Nov. 17th - his graduation is planned to be on Nov 6th.  Does anyone know if he will still probably be flown out to San Antonio the Saturday following graduation or will they hold him in Great lakes until a date closer to the start of his schooling?  I am just trying to figure out when I should plan to leave the great lakes area following graduation.

There are times that a Sailor will be on hold after graduation, but that is also rare.

Comment by lemonelephant on August 26, 2015 at 1:35am

mikmack, as soon as your Sailor classes up and has the graduation date in the training schedule you can make plans. The date has changed at times for the entire class due to events at Lackland such as a change in command, but only rarely. There are very few Sailors who are set back at MA "A" School.

When is it safe to book a hotel and make plans?
