Donnita, We have Verizon. When my sailor is deployed, I call and they put his phone on hold. It does extend the contract time - but he does not have to pay anything those months. We have done this three times already (boot camp, Kuwait and current deployment).

Eric's wife, Here are some replies I got from some Texas' moms about San Antonio:

To the wife heading to San Antonio...Things to do...The Alamo, the riverwalk (there is a boat you can ride down the river. I don't know how much it costs, or you can walk up and down the riverwalk. There are several Missions you can visit. There is Sea World, Fiesta Texas, San Antonio Zoo. As far as food...Bill Miller's has THE BEST BBQ in San Antonio, Alamo Cafe is good Mexican food, there used to be a place called Mi Tierra's downtown...they were excellent but I don't know if they are still there, Dick's is on the Riverwalk, there is also a Hard Rock Cafe, and Joe's Crab Shack on the riverwalk. I hope those help...if she needs more I still have friends in the SA area.

and here is another:

To the wife heading to San Antonio - I know from personal experience how tight money can be - the good news is there are a TON of things you can do in San Antonio that are FREE!!! Alamo, Riverwalk, El Mercado (the Market). Also, if I am not mistaken, Sea World has free admission for all military members and their dependents - just call ahead and double check on that. Now to get from the base to any of these you will need either a car or you will have to take a cab. If you are able to rent a car you can drive just about 2 1/2 hours and visit Austin as well. The Hill Country is beautiful and the drive from San Antonio to Austin is really pretty. Especially if the wild flowers are blooming. Believe it or not, Texas is not all desert and tumble weeds! LOL In Austin you can visit the State Capitol, walk down Congress Ave and see the bats as dusk. Zilker Park is also a great place. The biggest money saver you need to remember is to ALWAYS ask for the military discount!!!

ugh - I typed you a nice long comment and deleted it on accident!

ok - try again!! You MUST go see the Alamo!! haha - only for Texas history buffs only!
Try the Riverwalk - lots of neat places to eat there. I've asked around for you!
When do you leave? I have not been to San Antonio for fun in years - just drive through all the time!

I was really good about keeping myself busy when Eric was in BC but now since he's in a-school I go to work, then come home and sit on my phone. It's making me craaazy! I need to get out of my house! lol

Richi's mom, I live in Texas. I would LOVE to help your daughter get around!
What does she want to see? I am about 5 hours from San Antonio - but have weekends off.

and I guess they can apply for an "overnight chit" not sure if it will be granted or not, not going to get my hopes up.

For future reference of anyone who plans on traveling to Lackland AFB to visit their sailor, you can only book a room 3 days in advance if you are planning to stay on base.. Priority obviously goes to families who are relocating and other enlisted military. My husband did check with them and they said it's rare that they are ever fully booked. So lets hope that I get a room! lol. Also I guess they have some rule that your sailor and you cannot share a car..?? not sure of the details on this one. My husband isn't sure if that means he can't ride with me in a car i've rented, or if we even can't share a taxi.

Good - just wanted you to know! If you get to stay on base, I bet you will have plenty of "alone" time, then! "Alone" time does not have to occur only when it is dark outside! :)

Brenda Sue- Eric will be finishing week 3 by the time I get there so he should have liberty. Also I am staying on base and not renting a car so I doubt we will be leaving base much. Unfortunatly that is the only weekend I am able to go visit due to my work schedule, I would much rather wait till he has overnight liberty, but we both agreed it's important to save money and for me to keep my job as long as I can.
