So Philip is going to Norfolk which is only a few hours from our home. He has already bought a ticket to fly home on Saturday. Does he have to wait for his itinerary since he's not going to be using it?

I wouldn't - not when you are dealing with the military.

David (& Kathi) - when did they graduate?

Brenda Sue- So I should deffinitley NOT pay for a ticket home ahead of time right? I've read some of the horror stories from sailors who had to wait a long time for their itinerary.

Yep - but you sure would rather them pay for the ticket to the duty station than you pay for a ticket to Bahrain, Guam, Japan, etc.

My son was at school almost 6 weeks after he finished before he got to come home. He called one day - we bought the ticket and he came home the next.
Southwest is good about last minute flights. Also, flying with a military rate (someone said) that they change the flights for free - but you might pay a bit more.

We were kinda lucky, his duty station is Portsmouth, VA. We drove him back so he could have his truck there. But since then he has been all over the world in just a couple of years (Kuwait, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Seychelles, Dijoubti).

so even if they know where their duty station is, they still have to wait for the navy to give them the itinerary before they can leave? what if the navy isn't paying for their plane ticket? it's my understanding that the navy will pay for either a plane ticket home (for his 2 weeks of leave) or a plane ticket to his next duty station.

can someone explain this "itinerary" to me?

Debra...I was afraid of that. We have this huge "welcome home" party planned for Philip that sounds like will have to be put on hold. Is your son staying stateside or going overseas? Philip said he heard that the ones staying in the States are more likely to get their orders on time and Philip is staying in the States. I am so sorry for you and your son! My thoughts and prayers go out to you guys!!!

Nic's Little Wife, My son is graduating from San Antonio on Friday and was chosen for PRP position. He had heard rumors that there were not many positions but his mentor told him that if he was chosen for the PRP program that's what he would do. That was not the case. When they got their orders the other week, there were no openings for PRP's. However, there were a lot of stateside billets open. It is very important for you Husband to study VERY HARD!! Philip was ranked in the top 8 of his class and that's why he got the billet he wanted. When they put the billets on the board the PRP's still could only choose from certain billets. Philip said they started with the #1 rank person in the class and ask them which billet they want. Then moved on to the #2 etc until everyone in the class had picked their billet. Good Luck to your husband and hope you get to stay Stateside!

My son is set to graduate "A" School on Friday. He received his orders which will be here in the States so we went ahead and booked his flight to fly home on Saturday. Now he called tonight and said he has not yet received his itinerary and may not have it by Saturday. If he doesn't have it he can't come home for leave as he thought. Did others from the last graduating class the other week run into this problem? Did your Kids get to come home ontime? Philip was so excited and tonight he sounded so down at the thoughts that he may not get to come home on Saturday.

jadsmom, I will have to tell my husband I met another friend from this site! Today was his first day of class, I looked up PRP a few days ago after reading a little about it on this post. I hope they have billets to fill because I really think it would be a great opportunity for my husband, i'm all for it! He said they have a tentative graduation date for 4/30, lets hope all goes as planned! I am anxious and excited to start my new life! I heard OC spray is friday, I hope they all do well! Not something i would want to go through!
