NavyMAMom same here, son graduated BC 2/7 and got OC yesterday too. Stated worst then expected but did well.
Hi. My son graduated BC 2/7/14 and arrived in SA 2/8/14. His classes started 2/17/14 and they had PFA that same day. I just spoke to him and he said that they had their first test today and also got OC sprayed today( he said it really hurt but he was still able to complete the course and pass). He said the sailors who did not pass got set back. He said they find out their orders tomorrow. Things seem to be happening a lot faster than the break down says.
Enjoy it! The weather was beautiful while we were there! Ironically for us, we pulled in our driveway, just outside of Denver about 7:30 Saturday night and about 9:00 p.m. it started to snow! I really loved the weather there! The highway system there is a bit crazy compared to here. There are lots of places on base to eat and places like Godfathers will deliver to the place with the pool tables so you don't have to go to them. We used both mapquest and a gps. I can tell you for a change that our gps was more helpful than mapquest. It seemed like most of the guards as you come into Lackland weren't very knowledgeable (except 1) but after you get in, people on base are. We had to stop because we had a hard time finding Carter Hall on Friday morning. We found a couple of Air Force guys and asked them. Ironically it was the building right behind us (go figure). Do be careful with taking pictures. You can take pics with your son while on base, but you cannot take pics of any of the Air Force recruits. Most areas around the Air Force area they won't allow you to take pics either. They will let you know too. NTTC which is the Navy section is a pretty small area of the base. It seemed like they didn't mind so much if pics were taken there. Have fun! Keep us posted on what you thought!
My son has said the same thing about the maturity level of some of the Sailors. He said it was that way at GL also. He is barely 19 and could not believe some of them who are much older than he and how they were acting.
Thank you for all your wonderful and helpful information. I can't wait to go visit with him and soak in some warm air this next weekend. Then we will also be going back for his March 28th graduation.
You can't actually go into their barracks, but there is an area where there are some picnic tables and pool tables and stuff. We hung out there. The problem we had the first night was getting on base. My son had done his chit about 2 weeks before we arrived. Chief (or whoever does the paperwork) had emailed it to whomever it was to go to, however when we arrived to check in and get our pass they didn't have what they needed so he had to come to the gate and help get us in. After he did that, the folks at the gate were super nice and extended our gate pass thru Sunday. We didn't need it that long as we were driving and headed home on Saturday, but they told us if we needed to stay extra time, that would give us the opportunity to do it. Any adult in the car will be required to show ID everytime you enter thru the gates. Only 1 person is allowed to drive on base. They didn't require me to show the birth certs I brought for the kids, although, I would still suggest to bring them, as you never know who will be working the gate at the time. Make sure if your sailor wants to ride in your car that they have a chit for that. They can NOT be in your car without a chit. That chit they will have to have on them at all times. Sadly another sailor turned my son in when they saw him in the car, so then he had to prove he had a chit. For being adults, a lot of the sailors act like they are n kindergarten and are always working to get each other in trouble! Fortunately, my son had his chit, so he wasn't in trouble! Rules all apply like that do in Great Lakes. Speed limit is 20 there. They do colors at 5:30. There are LOTS of people all over on this base (more so than GL). Just take your time getting around. If your sailor can meet you at the gate, it will be much easier to navigate your way around the base. If you can get there on Thursday and get around, it will make Friday morning much easier too! I'm so glad we were able to do that.
We enjoyed it. My biggest complaint - there are lots of sailors who don't have family that are going. Command asks them as they go to hand them their certificates if they have any family for a photo op, if they say no, they scoot them off the stage. In my opinion, THOSE are the sailors that NEED the photo op the most. When I figured out what was going on, I was trying to take pics as quickly as I could. I am friends with several of the MA mom's from my son's PIR group. Sadly I only ended up getting about 1/2 the MAs with their certs because they pushed them thru so quickly. That was my only complaint. We were fortunate. We drove down. It took us 2 days to get down, but we arrived in San Antonio on Thursday evening. We went to base about 5:30. The muster during the week around 8:45 so family can stay until their final muster. We spent the evening with our sailor and about 40 or so other sailors. My son and several of his friends bough pizza. As 3 of our kids came, we sat around and talked while my kids played pool with the sailors (which was so much fun for them). The hotel we stayed at was off exit 10 on the 410 loop. You can get to the base off either exit 4 or 6 depending on what gate you go thru, so it was super easy to get to (although we didn't know that when we booked it). The biggest thing to keep in mind, there is usually an Air Force boot camp graduation so traffic on Friday morning is crazy. My son made the suggestion to be on base around 7 even though graduation for them isn't until 9. I'm glad we did!
sure thing.
HuskerFan, could you please add that info to Graduation Info for Lackland AFB - Navy MA graduation; Places to st.... Thanks.
