Thank you all so much for the info.

He's on San Diego Navel Base. That's all I know  Is that 32nd st?  Sorry to sound dumb... ugh  He will for now be living on his  ship as he doesn't have an apt yet. The ship "due date" keeps changing due to weather issues. But the  update last night it's  scheduled in next week. YEAH!! pray the weather cooperates. :)  He PCS'd to San Diego in early June and his ship had already deployed a few weeks prior. So he was in temporary housing until he met up with the ship.   I don't have a hotel yet. As I DO NOT want to  be in a sketchy area.  That's why I'm coming to you wonderful moms for a bit of assistance.   I hear traffic in CA is crazy/congested so I'm not so sure about  renting a car as I get really nervous in unfamiliar areas. My husband isn't coming so that's why I was asking about transportation.  Since I'll be solo I was hoping to find a hotel in an area that was safe and had stuff I could walk to (stores ,restaurants etc) if my son wasn't around.   My dream since I was young was to go to the Zoo. That's the only must do I have.

In your opinion is it best to be in the National City area or up in the Midway museum part of the City?

I so appreciate all your help.  Navy moms are the best!!

Hi!  We were out the end of October to see our son before he was shipped out.  The car I had reserved online was very reasonable, then we got to the car rental counter and they offered to upgrade us to a convertible camaro at a discounted rate which my husband was all over so we splurged a little. He was at 32nd Street.  We could not get a room at either the Navy Lodge or Gateway there on base.  We stayed at  the Holiday Inn Express in National City.  It is only about 10 minutes away and we were very comfortable there.  I was originally supposed to go out by myself so I appreciated being close to the Naval Base and the added security of indoor room entrances which it didn't appear many of the hotels that were close had. With the area around the base I was a little nervous, even with my husband.  Downtown seemed pretty clean and was very nice.  He played tour guide aboard the USS Missouri and we enjoyed the 2 hour harbor tour.  Our son was able to get into the Missouri, the zoo and Sea World at no charge with his ID.  He did have to go online and do something special for Sea World.

I hope you enjoy your trip and the time with your son!

Hi CT MOM, I have been to SD to visit my sailor and rented a car. Getting around is fairly easy! Rental is cheap! My son is stationed on 32nd street. Your son should be able to get you a room on base at Navy Lodge. Great place to stay. That is where we stay when visiting.LOTS to see and do in SD. Must go downtown to headlamp quarters at night. Will be beautiful at Christmas time! Have a WONDERFUL time!!

Hi CT mom, if you could clarify which base your son is at, I'm happy to share insights based on my experiences.  My son is at 32nd street and we have been there a couple of times.  There are a few hotels close by, but most of the area close by is very questionable -- unless you'd like to splurge on the downtown hotels that I am sure are quite expensive - and well beyond my budget! :)  If 32nd street, let me know and I have lots that i'd be happy to share, just let me know.

Hi CTmom - How exciting to be coming out to see your son in a couple of weeks!

San Diego does not have great public transportation.  We do have buses but they are not always the easiest to use if you don't know your timetable. We also have a trolley line but it can be pretty limited depending where you are and is not on Coronado at all if that is where he is stationed.  I would suggest Uber, Lyft, or cabs as your best bet. I'm not sure which base your son is stationed at or where you are staying.  If he is on 32nd St. and you are staying close by there isn't a ton within walking distance of that base and the area can be a little sketchy.  If he is on Coronado - there is a lot to do on the island but the base is on the far side of the island so you would probably want to take some form of transportation from the base to wherever you want to be.  I hope that helps a little.

Hi, I'll be heading to San Diego on Dec 27th to visit my son and am in  need of some hotel advice.  Since I'm not familiar with the area I don't know how..far..things are or walking distances. etc. I can't ask him as he's deployed at the moment.

Is there public transportation or uber out there that I can take if he has to work?  Is it easy and safe to walk around the area?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I'm happy to check with my son in SD. I don't know California island...do you mean Coronado? It's a high demand area for rentals and we definitely scrambled to find a place.

Hi,
I wrote on here before and now . However didn't know exactly what base. I was wondering if anybody knew any decent housing near the north California island base . It's kind of scary trying to find a place a not knowing if it's a good area. Any advice would be great :)

hi all ! my son is in the process of moving to SD. does anyone know any reasonably priced and reputable companies for transporting his car? the car is currently in Colorado. thanks!

Thanks for the replies! It's a really tight market for rentals right now and he's an e5 with shore duty so no ship or barracks. Got a temporary set-up for the week and fingers crossed he has an apartment by next weekend.
