OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Hello Everyone!

My son PIR'd back in May. He has been at "A" school but has now had to choose a new rating. He got BU and just arrived in Gulfport this evening. He is a reservist and had wanted SW or BU in the Seabee Community originally when he enlisted. We are thankful that he was retained and offered a new rating!

He has arrived for the weekend and so has so far just been to his barracks. He arrived after chow and said that he may not go anywhere without a buddy. Thankfully, some of the Sailors shared pizza with him...so if your Sailors are one of them...thank you! It just makes a mom "feel good".

We are hoping that this is where he needs to be and that he will flourish and be an asset. He has a bad case of homesickness right now...already been away from home since the end of March...and then had settled in at the base he was at...only to move again...such is Military life sometimes!

If you any of you can direct me to some posts about Builders school or post something new for me I would greatly appreciate it. I am praying that in a few months I will be the proud mom of a Fighting Seabee!

Kelleypen - I understand what you said. Ten years ago, my two oldest sons (16 & 15) were paging in our state senate with two friends (also 16 & 15) that lived down the street. My sons had walked to their house so that their mother could take them to the capitol. They called shortly after they arrived and told me to turn the news on the TV. I did and we watched in horror at the events that were unfolding. My friend (the other mother) told me that the four of them were pacing the floor talking about where they could go to join to fight whoever had just done this to our country. The capitol was closed so they did not go to page and they spent the rest of the day looking for something that they could do to help. They were not even old enough to donate blood.

Today, my friend's son is a Marine serving his second deployment in Afghanistan. Her daughter is a police dispatcher in a large police department in another state and her husband is a policeman.

Our oldest son is a firefighter. Our second son is in the Army National Guard and has just left for OBT. These were the four that day that needed to find a way to serve.

Our third son is in the Marine Reserves (the quickest way into the USMC according to his recruiter) preparing to activate and deploy next year to Afghanistan. Our youngest son is my SeaBee in 133.

Old Glory still waves over the land of the free because of the brave!

Ten years ago today I was driving to work. I had just dropped my kids off at school and was on my way when I turned on the radio and heard what was happening:  two jets had just crashed into the World Trade Center. Tears began streaming down my face as I listened to the horrific report. Soon I was crying hard enough that I had to pull over to the side of the road. Then I felt a peace. I heard the last verse of the national anthem in my mind. I had never memorized it before, but I knew it. I sang it softly.
O thus be it ever when free-men shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation;
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust!”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I felt a comforting presence and a warning–this would affect my then 14 year old son. He would serve his country in the war this would cause. I didn’t say a word to anyone about the second part. I didn’t want to jinx it. My son enlisted shortly after his 19th birthday. I wasn’t surprised. He deploys again this winter.

In June, our Chorale sang Rene Clausen’s Memorial in the Lincoln Center. It is an incredibly moving and emotionally difficult piece of music. We received a standing Ovation from New Yorkers. We perform it again tonight.

When the 1200 seat auditorium was out of tickets after the first day they were available, we put in a second concert. That one sold out too. We’re going to have a busy, but emotional evening.

God bless America.

Kim, great! I look forward to hearing from you. My husband is in 133. He will be home for 8 months and then he deploys again.

SeabeeWife20, he is with Battalion one and doesn't return for a few months.  I'm not sure of when yet. I'll message you soon.  I wish I there to help with this. It's sounds fun.  What battalion is your husband in?
Comment by SeabeeWife20 on September 7, 2011 at 10:11pm

Kim, what battalion is he in and when does he return? I will gladly make him a sign on your behalf. They are 2x2 wood signs. They are $5 each (typically) and are posted at the entrance of the base so when they arrive in they can see them. If you want me to do it, just message me and let me know. We can go over the details of what you want the sign to say and look like also. I am having some of my girlfriends help me out, so it may not be me who does the sign but it will be done if you request it!! Looking forward to hearing from you :D

How exciting SeabeeWife20! I also like your comment about making signs for his friends.  I hope someone is so gracious to our son when he returns because he won't have anyone there to greet him when he returns.
