OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

I haven't been on for a little bit doing any commenting but I try to read and learn.  I will be on here more and more commenting as my sons first deployment comes.  I wish there was info for everything a mom needs to know but doesn't know what to ask about deployment.  Anyway, I just got to see my Seabee this weekend for three days.  He drove up here to Ohio to be the best man in his brothers wedding.  Then he finally told them the secret he told me to keep.  I was about to bust.  He was going to propose to his girlfriend the night of the rehearsal and he did and she said yes.  We are cherishing every happy moment we can right now between now and deployment time.

Cudawn....thanks! I am hoping he will change his mind like you say.  He has already told me that he will fill out the Power of Attorney before the next deployment, so I take that as a good sign.  As far as not committing to anything for a whole month on his return, I can totally understand that as that also happened as he was being deployed.  The date kept changing and we took a big chance of being with him the week he deployed.  I wish he would have let us go on base to see him off but thats okay we were able to have breakfast that morning and that's good enough for me. Oh and thanks for the info on the airline tickets too because we have no idea how to fly or purchase tickets lol

Thanks ladies, I will look into this.  If ever finds out that I have this information, he could be very upset with me. He seems to be a lot like his mom haha.  He is battalion 1. You know what is really funny, there are 3 seabee moms here in town and I believe they are all with different battalions!

I've been in contact with my son's Ombudsmen. She's great! She even had the Chaplin check up on him at FTX and he just called me today. So far I am very impressed with the support.

Kim: My son never gave permission for me to talk to the Ombudsmen...They are there for all the families....you just give the Ombudsman his battalion, name, rate and rank and they'll tell you what you want to know...you can get the Ombudsmen info from their Facebook page or just google his battalion and the website should come up for the FRG for that battalion...I don't know what battalion he is in but if he is in 133 I can give you the Ombudsmen info.

You ladies are very fortunate that your seabees gave permission to the ombudsman!  Our son doesn't want me to have access to the ombudsman and I really don't know any other mom in his battalion that I have any contact with and would be willing to help me out with information.  He keeps in contact with us and hopefully updated on what is happening :)

He also has to go to C school.  Will he get to come home at the end of A school or will they send him on to C school?

Cathy and cjt's mom: When Tyler came home from Aghan last August, the actual date of his arrival was changed 4 times that particular week...that can make planning your trip a little tricky...as I live about 2 1/2 hours from base that was not a problem for us...but the Ombudsmen can help with that info and 133s Ombudsmen didn't mind being called every day for any new info....praying all things work out so you'll be there at the right time...
