OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Yes my daughter has a trinity on her dog tags. Once they are out of BC (or during at somepoint) they are given permission to wear these. It can not be huge. I think someone said no larger than a quarter size, I can not remember for certain, but yes they can wear them.

RobinM, I sent you a message also and have put your name on the list to keep updated.  Thank  you.

I have a question, does anyone know if a Seabee is allowed to wear a cross on his neck in addition to the dog tags they wear?  Is it permissable?

Well broken leg and all....just over a month from heading back home.  Does anyone know about or know how to get info on the homecomings?  I know we can't publicly post that kind of info, but I would like to know any details if anyone knows anything.  Thanks.  Mine is NMCB 74 coming home from Spain.

Hello ktssong.  I would be interested in that breakfast thing in Cincinnati.  I sent you a friend request, and we can talk more there if you can.  Thanks.

My son graduated from A school two weeks ago and has been home on leave, he leaves shortly for his first assignment in Sicily. I am sad and proud. I am going to miss him a lot.

Ok ladies, I have a ?

Has anyone mailed anything to Iraq and it got there. I sent a letter 2 weeks ago  to see if it arrives before I send a pkg and he hasn't gotten it yet. Anyone else having problems? I hope he didn't give me the wrong address. Is there anyone to contact to check on an address?

@julieb- my daughter and your daughter are friends. I text Kay and ask her to go and check on her. She is with her, it is more of a "CA' thing. She is going through, as I am sure many are right now, the need to get things in order for the decommisioning and things are just coming at them like crazy. I know they have gotten riden pretty hard the last week. Something to do with a Seebee and his wife/girlfriend that were selling drugs. I know that was a bad one and then just the things going on with the change over. Kayla would tell me if there was anything going on, she said you were there a few weeks ago. sounds like she misses home. I know that is hard for us as momma's. I ask Kay to spend some more time with her, she is usually running with her friend from IT. This helps Kay also since she said they need to spend time with other friends as well since "mainy" do not like Oxnard.

I sent you a message before I knew for sure it was your girl. You can PM me and from there we can keep eachother updated on what is going on.

Sleep easy, I know what you are feeling. We just had a pretty rough month also. I said whan June is done, thy can start fresh.

Hello, I have a SeaBee daughter who is really down right now. She makes it sound so bad and negative. How do other people get through the lows? She is at the end of her first year and not deployed yet. So tired of the woe me, from a used to be -motivated, outgoing ,leader!!!!! Any support for me would be great. Any place she can go for support? I know she can't be the only one!

So should I ask him if he has filled out a POA or does he get a packet of paperwork from them after ECS to take care of these things?  When you say "Legal" does that mean on the base they have a Legal Dept he needs to go to and ask for the form.  I'm sorry I am so high maintenance.  I feel like I'm in a foreign land and I just am wondering around to accomplish everything we need to so we don't have in problems in the future because we didn't take care of something.
