The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Navy weeks in Cincinnati is coming up Aug 29 and I'm trying to get at least 10 women interested in committing to coming to a breakfast on either Aug 29,30 or Sept 1 or 2 in Cincinnati.  The Lt. that is helping to organize events has said that the would meet with Navy Moms in Cincinnati area for a breakfast and have one of the higher ups (Brass he hoped) to join us and talk with us and answer questions.  This is a unique opportunity and I'd love to be able to get this together.  I've posted this on Navy moms is there anyone on this group that is from Cincinnati or close by that would committ to coming?  I need 10 to make this happen.

PS  My son was home for almost two weeks and I just can't put in words how the family pulling in around him felt so warm and everyone of his brothers and sisters just made so much effort to take every opportunity to see him. From home cooked meals, to a night out for ice cream to sitting in his car on my lunchbreak at work and eating a McDonalds lunch together and just chatting.  Well, you know, moments that make you choke up.  I had a coupon for a haircut at a new barber shop in town and before he left he went for his haircut and he said it was the best haircut he had in his life.  He just seems so happy with the simple things in life.  If one word could sum everything up it would be for all of us "Grateful".

I really need to get on here everyday but I work so much it's hard to.  I always hop on and then read back several days to try to catch up and see what interesting updates you all bring me.  So here I am again tonight climbing on and dipping in on conversations and I don't quite understand the Medical POA conversation.  If my son is single, is this something I need to know about to make sure I'm on something or have a copy of in case of emergency?  Sorry I'm such a pain when I hop on here like this.  I'm so eager to learn everything I need to know from the experienced moms so I don't have to learn the hard way.  Just makes sense to be prepared.

Dave'sSeaBeeMom-good question. It's not just the Seabees that are overmanned, it's about 31 different rates throughout the Navy that are like this. And actually I have spoken to other military branches and they are just as overmanned if not more so. There are holds being placed on recruiting stations so the normal amount of people per month being sent to boot camp has decreased. They are looking at PTS very seriously right now and if you aren't trying to rank up or have infranctions in your military history you get the boot. Then those who have been in for too long and are basically stagnet they are booting them as well. With the economy being as bad as it's been, the military was the only "job" people could find. Unfortunately, they didn't realize that this is a demanding lifestyle, not a job, and aren't performing to standards. So now the mIlitary has to take action to attempt to get our branches of service back to what it used to be.....or try to anyway. The sad thing is they are kicking out some really well tenured members and letting the youngsters in hoping they will last longer and have more energy. No one does that anymore....for the most part it's 4-6 years of service with a free degree and then they get out. It's definitely going to be interesting to see where, how, and what the military will develop in to in the years to come.

Hello Seabee Moms from a new DEP Seabee Mom!  My son just signed his contract last week, and I still have 200 days before he leaves for boot camp. I am overflowing with pride in him, and his decision to serve and become a Seabee like his Dad was, but the anxiety is overwhelming. I look forward to talking with you all and learning from your experiences!

Thanks for all the advice. Will a POA & Health Care Advance Directive (with HIPAA) drawn up by a civilian lawyer, witnessed, and notarized be acceptable to the Navy?
Comment by Tobianne on June 22, 2011 at 10:25pm

When they go for deployment, they actually offer to have drawn up for the Seabee. I have one for medical and all else. They actually "do" have copies of these. I am not sure if this is a "new" thing as my kiddo has said that she was basically told this is needed for out of the country. They have them, I think it has to do with if they do get injured. Or maybe it is just the 40 trying to stay on top of things.

I know how you feel RobinM, nothing like not knowing and then feeling like you are being yelled at to boot. I am sure your son was able to give you what info he had to give. I hope he is better soon.

RobinM - It must have been hard on you, but I just wanted to thank you for sharing. My SeaBee is still in ECS, but when he comes home again there will be a POA and a Health Care Advance Directive waiting for him to sign! I would not have thought to ask him about getting it done had you not shared your experience. I am very grateful for your sharing.

Just a small note.  I had posted with some concerns for my son who was injurred.  I have heard from him and he is doing better.  He's got just over a month, and then his deployment should be bringing him back home.

Just a small piece of advice I learned the hard way as well....don't make calls on behalf of your son/daughter.  I did that with concerns when he broke his leg and just made things harder for him.  Sad, but true.  He's doing better now, and as long as I know he is...I'm better.  Thanks for the support!!
