OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Hello. My name is Kelley and my Seabee is in NMCB 11 out of Gulfport MS. He's a construction mechanic and part of the water well team. He deploys in February. I've been hoping to find a place like this.

Jenny,
my son is a BU2 (builder) and this year will be the 1st year in six years that he will be able to be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
And it was also the first time in six yrs that he was able to come home for his 'B'day. It's really nice having him closer to home for awhile.

And for all of us - be careful of the info you give out on this site/or any non-secure site - this is a very public site - anybody can read it all. There are a few Navy Mom's sites which are more secure; or e-mail each other personally.

What is the difference between active duty and enlisted? My son mentioned that when he finishes A school in Gulfport,That if he doesn't find a construction job - he will probably do active duty.

Tracy-
My son has been in the Navy almost 6 yrs. and had his A school in Gulf Port, MS, and then was stationed in Iceland for 1 1/2 yrs. After that he was stationed at Port Hueneme, CA for 3 yrs. where he was deployed to Djibouti Africa (7 mo.), Japan (2 mo,) and Afghanistan (6mo). He is now stationed at Bangor. WA (before he got stationed there, I never new there was a Bangor on each coast, I had only heard of the one in Maine.)
There are Seabees stationed at many of the Navy bases - they help to keep the bases running, working in the public works depts.

Hi everyone, my son Michael will be graduating from Gulfport soon, what happens next? He said that he will be coming home for a while. I think that it sounds like he is in the reserves, and will just have to report one weekend a month, Is this true? or can he sign up for full time?

Hi everyone,

I always like to listen to a tune as I post a comment so hope you like this choice. So my Sailor, Chris is in Gulfport and glad that he finally classed up. He reached phase 2 and asked me to ship some civ clothes and shoes. Chris said he should graduate Nov 7 and it's a two day event, a day that he has to do some things and a day that we can be a part of. He told me the rooms on base are only about $20 a night. Anyone know if this is true?
Thanks
Anita

Hi everyone,
My son was to leave for Gulfport today from Great Lakes. Not sure what to think with the hurricane and all. From what I've read here, I assume that new Sailors can head that way. I hoped for a phone call this evening but nothing yet. Any news since Monday on Gulfport would be greatly appreciated:) Thanks, Anita

I spoke with my son in Gulfport last evening (Sun), he couldn't talk long because they were on their way to the "warehouse" where his group will be riding out the storm. Praying for everyone in the hurricane path, esp. our Sailors!

Hi everyone,
We have hit the last week till PIR. We will hit the road to Great Lakes one week from today. Christopher will be on his way to Gulfport Wednesday, the 3rd for welding. Any advise on how much of his stuff I should ship there? Thanks.
