Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Thank you, CBGB.  Our son actually enjoyed the climbing--until he hurt his knee.  :-)  Lynette, I hope your son does make it home.  I, too, am thinking of flying to TX to visit our son if he can't make it up here, but I need to know 2  weeks ahead to get a good plane fare.  Or, if we can get a dog sitter, we will all drive down.

My son flew into FLW back in November of 2012.  He flew right onto the base to in a little prop job plane.  I think it sat about 8 people.  When he flew home for Christmas, they bussed everyone to St. Louis airport (2 hours away) and they flew out of there.  They picked them all up when they returned from Christmas.  When he flew out to Gulfport in February, he flew directly out of FLW base again. Have not seen him since we took his truck to him in Gulfport in March.  He was hoping to get home on leave for a week in 2 more weeks, but they keep messing up his paperwork for leave and now he says he may not get it.  I am flying down to see him for a day or two if he does not get leave approved.  I have never been away from him for so long.  Good luck to all your new Seabees that are just beginning their next adventure.

Thanks beachmom. We'll see what happens when he goes so far I think there are 3 going in his group also.
Lighthouse- I hope your son has time for a complete recovery. My husband is a utility co. Lineman for over 20 years, climbing school is no joke but the more they do it the easier it gets. My son went to the recruiter with the intention of becoming a CE but jumped at EO when it was offered. He has climbed some with his dad and went to 2 years of college for electrical construction. It looks like they get to do a little of everything once in the field. Good luck to your son, hope the leave is approved.

He actually flew right on base! He called his OD before he left Chicago to let them know he was coming and what time he landed. There were only 3 sailors from his PIR going to FLW. Once they landed, someone was there to get them.

Karen, thank you for asking!  Our son said that his injury is worse than originally thought, although it is improving some.  Apparently, he is still waiting for a knee brace to be "prescribed."  Also, he will have to go off-base for PT, starting ???  I forgot to ask exactly when.

In spite off all this, he was very happy this week.  A high-up chief requested that our son do yeoman duty for him (while he is on hold) and is very pleased with his work.  Apparently, there is a good-sized group of new CRs straight from P.I.R. beginning tomorrow, and he has been asked by this chief to help with their indoctrination (A school introduction, paperwork, and such).  He has always been good at making lemonade out of lemons and he likes to help and encourage people.

We are praying he get the leave right after his birthday and over Labor Day which he has requested.  He has been there since P.I.R. the end of May and probably won't get to rejoin a class at block 5 until some time in Sept., so it would be a good chance to visit.

Beachmom thanks and congratulations on your son's PIR. How did he get from the airport to FLW? I saw that they were responsible to get transportation from the airport to the base.

CBGB, my son flew out of O'Hare at 1:45pm. He was dropped off at the airport at 3:45am. I was waiting for him at Gate 2, 2A is where the bus drops them. There is a guy from the USO directing them on where to go. They are all going to different locations I was able to get a gate pass from American Airlines and go through security with my son and sit with him until he left just make sure you have your drivers license to show at security

Yesterday was my son's PIR and today he flew to FLW to start his A school. We had the best weekend ever in GL and now looking forward to A school. My son is very excited and says he has a lot of cool stuff to learn. God bless his mentor!
