Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Cmcninch we're from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Will you be going to the graduation? We are headed down for it..so if you want to send me a message with your daughter's name and such I'll be sure to take some pictures of the ceremony for you :)

My son received his orders this weekend!!! He's headed out to Washington DC to be part of the Construction Maintainence Battalion Unit 202  assigned to Washinton DC. The headquarters for 202 is in Little Creek VA.  We're pretty excited..he's okay with it! (Mr. Excitement for ya) He was hoping for Gulf Port but that's the way the Navy rolls. He was the first in his class to receive his orders.

cmcninch did your daughter tell you that they all had to strip and rewax their floors this weekend as a result of the newbies going a bit wild when they got to FLW. My son is soooo ready to get going with "real" navy life! LOL

Thanks everyone for the encouraging details about FLW. It sounds like he will love it. He is a real outdoors man, and has wanted to be an EO his whole life. Glad to hear your children have had good experiences there.

cmcninch: My younger son has already staked out the bigger TV and video games from his brother's room. We will be going through the same thing when he gets leave after A school.

Debi, Thanks for the great info about FLW. It makes me feel better knowing a little about where he is going. Sounds like he will have a lot to do there.

EO is a cool rate. My son is graduating on 8/7 from FLW as an EO. They learn to operate adult sized Tonka Toys :) aka..anything you see on a road construction site, bull dozers, cranes, dump trucks, Back Hoes, fork lifts, and now they are doing Semi Trucks. They do watch, PT, have PFAs once a month, and have tons of fun!

There is a TON of stuff to do on base from bowling, to go karts, to two large shopping areas with tons of food vendors like taco bell, subway, etc. Theres an Outdoor Adventure area where you can rent ANYTHING you need for an outdoor experience from Archery, Trap Shooting, camping, fishing, canoeing, paintball etc. There's an area called Happy Hollow on base that is alike a big picnic park with a river running right through it where they can swim and just relax.

Taxis on base are run by a veteran's group and they only charge $1.50 per way per military person when ON base. Don't know what off base costs.

They phase up as a class so it could be sometime before they get off base privilages unless your SR's class pulls it together.

Its not a "Navy base" so your Seabee will probably be calling you to send them stuff that isn't carried at the NEX (aka PX). My son needed 5 dark blue Hanes Layflat colllar NON pocket Tshirts (crew neck style) for his seabag. If you're going to have an EO start looking for those now! They are not easy to find and they don't have them at FLW.

Hope that helps a little bit :)

Thank you, Karen!  I hope I can touch base with him today.

Hey Kassidys mom, My son is on Ship 12 Div 325 PIR date of 8/30. He too will be going to FLW for EO. I am not too sure of what the schooling and job after will entail. It looks like a pretty cool spot to be in the military. He is very excited about doing the job, but is not very thrilled with boot camp at the moment.

Anyone have new SR's that will be at FLW after PIR of 08/30? Mys SR daughter is going to be a EO...not sure what all that will entail...any feedback?

Lighthouse3:  Sorry to hear about your son's injury.  Hope he is feeling better soon.  Happy to hear the meniscus was not torn as that would have been an injury that would have taken more time to rehabilitate.  Hang in there.  Keep us posted on how he is doing.

I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing well. I'm not sure they can switch or not, but your comment about having to climb anyway is a good point. Our son will be in the reserves (although he had planned and wanted to go active), but that may not affect anything.
Comment by Tobianne on July 24, 2013 at 12:13pm
She finshed up fine. Has pain every now and then, she does physical therapy for a few things. He will do fine. I did not know they could switch. Also keep in mind, as a Seabee, he could climb even if that is not his job. She has not done much climbing and she has been in for 3 years. She does many aspects, but climbing hasnt been one yet. I think it depends on who is around and next for whatever comes up. Deployments are different. Some do much of the job they trained for, some do not.
I hope he is recooperating well.
