OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

My father was also a lineman. They can do that if the need is there. Most of what her battalion has done is basically run lines and set electric up. Your son will learn a moderate amount about that job. My daughter has done SW , UT, EO and BU. Lol.
They just came back from a project, my daughter was one of 4 girls and 15 males there. She was on the end of moving large sheets for like a building with rebar welded into them. That was the decking or floor and the 2 girls in the front were walking way to fast ( mine was the only one in the back) causing her to fall (She was bruised up good, as the decking around 250 lbs landed on her rt side) so she was not happy. Her dad ask why she was doing a labor job...... her answer was, if you are in the Navy/Seabee..... you are a laborer, a UT, a BU, SW, EO, CE or a ma hanic. What ever the need is at the moment. They learn moderate amount about all the jobs. Now something major is left to those that have to real knowledge.

So do the CE build power lines? I didn't think the Navy had linemen. That is what my husband does for a living & my son wanted to do that for the Navy. He was told they didn't have a program for that.

CE is construction electrian. My daughter just had her 3 rd year as a CE. They are not Marine uniforms, they are Seabee uniforms. They just wear the uniforms to Marine standard. Higher rolled sleeves and such.
They have camo now digi uniforms. When my daughter was at SAFB she vot what looked like the old Army BTU's. They are the greens. Where reg. Navy wears the Blue.

Lighthouse, my son will be in Shepard some time next month. His PIR is 08/02. His rate is UT. What is a CE & why Marine Corps uniforms?

Joanne, my son just started "block 5" of the CE A school at Sheppard on Tuesday a.m. Their group moved to days for 2 weeks so they could learn to climb utility poles in the daytime. I believe he is supposed to be done mid-Sept. They are being measured for Marine Corps uniforms.

His group were on hold for 2 weeks waiting for their class to form. He said there is a shortage of instructors. He has 10 sailors and 10 Air Force persons in his group.

We are trying to plan a visit, but dog-sitting issues complicate all three of us going. We need wisdom, and a willing beagle-sitter.

Joanne and tabu my son is at SAFB.  He has been there since PIR 6/21.  He has been on hold and finally started class Monday night.  He seems to like it there.  DaltonsMom congrats on your Son's graduation.  He was such a big help to my son and his roommate.  I have heard such wonderful things about him.  I wish him much happiness and success in his new assignment. Seabee Mom how long has your son been there?  I would love to plan a trip there but just started a new job and do not have any time off.

Debi,

I'm sure you are so excited to have your son home for a few days, I'm jealous!  I just sent you a private message with several questions about A school.  I feel blessed to have all you ladies helping me through BC then A School!

Hi BeachMom, glad you found this group! These moms are GREAT and full of information! My son is at FLW in Missouri and will graduate on Aug. 7 from A school. We're still waiting to find out where he will go next but I 'know' where he'll be next...HOME! for 10 days!! whoohoo!!! Personally I'm hoping for Virgina for his duty station because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the colonies and all the history that goes with that part of the country but it's not up to me ;) lol
