OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

It's nice to "meet" you, Hayden's Mom!  My son is enjoying being on hold, waiting for his class to form.  He passed his A-school PFA, although they were running in 100-degree heat on the runway.  He's enjoying being at an AFB, because he loves planes and likes to watch them.  He's making friends and enjoying the increased liberty.  He is now in "second phase," whatever that is.

Good Morning Seabee Moms,

My son is a brand new shiny Seabee and arrived in Gulfport ready and excited to start his Navy career. He had a decent bc experience, and by that I mean he passed everything easily and made wonderful life long friends. The stories were hysterical and he made the best of it, which is about all you can hope for. Looking forward to spending some time with all of you and appreciate the support as my family starts the next journey with our son!

Thank you, Karen.  Yes, that would be wonderful.  :-)  I'm sure they will be challenged, but will have a lot of fun, too.  You've got less than 3 weeks to go to PIR!

Lighthouse3.  Good luck to your son.  I am looking forward to hearing how things go for him.  I am looking forward to my son getting out of bc and in A School so we can communicate.  Would be awesome if they were in the same class.

One really interesting thing that happened is that he met a petty officer in TX who is the uncle of a young lady from near us in IL. She and my son were in a homeschool Spanish class I taught which began around 10 years ago. God has such a sense of humor! My son has a memory like an elephant, so of course he remembered the name and some family details.

Lighthouse3: My son had a 2 week wait, I think. It sounds like they start classes only once a month. He said to keep busy the best you can is great. He had a "head buddy" or something like that and he was super good to my son! I think that helped a lot also! I know one guy from his PIR date ended up waiting 6 weeks to start. My son is pretty good friends with him as they were in brother divisions and knew him and he felt pretty bad for him that he had to wait to start classes for so long.

Daltonsmom, thank you.  My son likes it so far, and loves the atmosphere (so different from boot camp), although he is currently on hold and in the "indoc" phase.  He said they may have a 4-week wait, so that may put him and Karen Ship03 Div 234's sailor in the same class.  :-)

My seabee daughter is back in the sandbox (2nd time). She is midway in her deployment and missing her  (now) 11 month baby she left behind.  She opted to stay with her Battalion - who is her second family (thus was deployed before her baby turned 1 which is normal policy).  She is able to skype most days with her baby.  He was throwing toys at her (I saw this first hand a few weeks ago.) and now he is throwing her kisses.

My son is there right now and is training to be a CE. Feel free to ask any questions. I try to do my best to help out. He should graduate there July 19. My son really likes it there!
