OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Does anyone have a CE training or having trained at Wichita Falls?  Mine just went there Saturday after PIR.

@ Debi,  We have a seabee!!   From what I understand, Ft. Wood is one of the most respected.  I understand your frustration.  I am still learning.  Seabee Mom for a bit.  Save your money for traveling. Wish I could be more help.

My son just graduated last Thursday, it was quite frustrating because the information never seemed carved in stone.  So, it went from Friday, to Thursday at 4pm and then with less than 24hrs notice, it changed to 1pm. Not sure if its always this way or not?

Hey SeaBee Moms and families..I have a question for you. For anyone who has had a SeaBee go through Fort Leonard Wood...what day of the week do they typically do graduation? I asked my SeaBee and he gave me the week'ish' that they would be graduating BUT that is the same week as son #2 will have his PIR from GL!  So I'm praying it's on a Wednesday or Thursday so we can zip back to GL for PIR.

In the picture, I'm in the bottom middle, my daughter in law is in the pink hat to the left and the other two Navy wives have husbands out on FEX with my son too.  Can't wait though to go back in July and spend the week with him so I get have some quality time with him.  Was there in March for 10 days.  I feel like I can't complain about missing him on Deployement if I don't take time to travel and see him while he is stateside.  My every vacaton moment...all 20 days of it has been spent traveling back and forth the last two years to visit and enourage him.  My other four kids live in my same hometown fortunately so I spend tons of time with them.  He's the youngest.

Haven't been on this group for awhile.  Was on the Group with kids in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Getting ready for the emotions that come again with this years deployment.  Waiting on pins and needles.  Don't know where he's going yet.  This will be the second deployement for my son.  First one was rough on the whole family especially him.  I hope it's somewhere safer this time.  I don't think we've fully recovered emotionally from Afghan.  No words can describe it.  I'm proud of him and how he handles everything.  Just returned from staying with his wife while he was at FEX.  I felt it was a way I could show my support by helping her while he was gone and making his absence go by quicker.  Got to me some of the other Navy wives.  Felt like a mom for all of them since all their families were at the other end of the country too.  She said they said that they wished their families would do that too.  I think our role as moms and mother in laws can be very important to our kids through this.  We are building stronger relationships in our family which is giving them emotional strength to be a stronger military.  It's what I like to believe anyway.  I'll post a picture I had taken of us before we all went into the GP Music Festival together.

Anyone have a CM in Port Hueneme graduating on June 20th?

Comment by Debi on May 21, 2013 at 10:14am

Well the EO's at FLW got a lesson in what happens when people do stupid things! They were all called in to watch 3 of thier more senior classmates go before the Captian's Mast for alcohol related infractions. Now all the EOs there are on a "lockdown" of sorts to teach them all that stupid is as stupid does.  I just hope seeing what can happen will teach some of the newer SeaBees a lesson so it doesn't happen to them.

Sandria -  He opted to go directly to Coronado so he could have some leave time in June for his sisters wedding.  He got in last night around 11:00.  Had a real nice phone visit while he was in the airport waiting.
