OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Debi - My son says the housing is much like a dorm room only bigger.  He shares a room, they each have their own bed, desk, closet and mini frig and the two of them share a bathroom.  He has not complained about his room and gets along well with his roommate.  Let me know whatever specific questions you have, I will be happy to share anything I know.

Amy, I am so sorry to hear about your son, that is what we as mothers fear the most.  Thank you for posting and your selflessness in sharing your story.  My son is very excited about going to Coronado, we think it is a beautiful place as well.  I will make sure to tell him to look for your sons picture in honor of his memory.  I love that his buddies still keep in contact with you, it is a brotherhood that makes me proud to be a Navy mom.  May God's peace be with you.

Lynette, I was laughing when I read your post, my son said exactly all the same things, Navy food was better, Ft Lost in the woods is boring, not much to do etc etc  But he too is making the best of it, can't wait to see him in 17 days!!!

Amy bamk,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your son. I can't imagine your pain but I do hope knowing your son was doing what he loved eases it in a small way. What a wonderful testament to your son that his friends continue to stay in contact with you. My thoughts are with you and I pray for the safety of all our young men and women who serve.

Sandria I hope my son and yours do get to hook up that would be so cool! And thank you for all the welcomes! I was feeling very "lost" after our PIR group kind of went their seperate ways. All their sailors moved on and I was still at RTC. Almost like someone shot the starting pistol for a race and I couldn't hear it!

I just heard from my son today that he's getting his orders tomorrow and leaving RTC on Thursday! I guess RTC wants him OUT!!! Funny that's how I felt during his senior year in high school but now I just want to bring him home ;) LOL

I can't wait to see where he goes after Ft. Lost in the Woods..(even the officer that gave them their swearing in at MEPS called it by that nickname LOL). Nice thing is that it's only an 8 hour drive from our home and I used to live in St. Louis so it's nothing to take a long weekend to visit at least once during his time there.

I am stoked to start this next step in being a Navy Mom...it'll be fun (I hope)

Debi - My son is an EO (Equipment Operator).  He gets to drive all kinds of BIG equipment...bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, forklifts, dump trucks, hummers, etc. etc.  He PIR'd 11/2/12 and finished in Fort Leonard Wood in mid-Feb.  He loves driving these machines.  My son didn't care for Fort Lost in the Woods much either, but he made do for 13 weeks.  Says that Army food does not compare to Navy food and not much happening around the base.  Good Luck to your son.  Maybe ours will meet up at some point.
