The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

NavyGma- Yes my son went to Italy right after A school.  He didn't finish A school till right after Christmas so he came home for a week over the Christmas Stand down.  He also was just home last month for the fist time since that first Christmas.  He's been in for 2 years and in Italy for 1 1/2.  Unless we can afford to go next summer we won't see him again until/ unless he returns stateside.  The Navy DOES NOT pay for them to return home to visit.  That cost is 100% you or your sailor.  Given that congress gets to fly free I think that should be a perk for our military too!!

that was my son's course as well.  FLW for A school following boot camp, then stationed in Gulfport as an EO.  He's been in GP for the last 5 years and has re-enlisted.

BelovedbyHim are you saying that your son was sent to Italy right after A school for his 3 year assignment. Goodness, is he able to come home at all during that time?

Navy Gma the FB page is under NMCB 133. Hope that helps, my son is in 133 also. He went to Virginia Beach for a couple years and is Back at Gulf Port now.

There is a Verizon store on highway 49 that is right across from Walmart a short ride from the base he could take a cab if he can't get a ride

I am also new to this site. Our son arrived in Gulfport this past weekend.  He lost his cell phone in transit:(  Our cell carrier is Verizon.  I temporarily suspended his cell #.  At this point, we have NO contact with him due to the lost cell phone. I don't know his new address in Gulfport; if I did, I would just contact Verizon and have a phone shipped to him.  At this point, he needs to fill out an insurance claim and get a new phone.  Does anyone know if there is a Verizon store on the base?! (I have confidence that he is just fine, but would love to communicate with him and encourage him!)

NavyGma- Welcome to the Bees.  Not all Bees will go to C school (mine is a BU too and hasn't gone yet) and while most Bees are at GP or PH they can be assigned to any US.military base anywhere in the world.  Mine is in public works in Italy.  Their first duty station will be a 3 year assignment.  Battalions are the closest to the Sea Navy in that they will go on Deployments lasting from 6-9 months with shorter assignments as needed.  They also may be called upon to assist in natural disaster situations (Earthquake in Japan, Hurricane in Haiti...)  I love that my Bee is learning skills that will serve him well in the Civilian world if he decides that he doesn't want to make a career out of the Navy.

I am so happy to have found this site since I know nothing about the Navy. I guess I thought when he graduates A School and is stationed somewhere, that somewhere is considered a battalion LOL  Goodness I am glad he won't be seeing my comments on here, course he would probably just laugh at/with me. Thanks Denise and Julie.

My son was assigned to 133 from C school which was he went to in Gulfport and from there was assigned to the battallion. He has been with 133 in Gulfport the whole time that he has been a Seabee. The battalion is basically the group that he is assigned to on the base. For homeport and deployments. There are a few here and also in California in Port Heuneme
