4myGem,  PIR is actually 9 weeks from arrival at boot camp. Even though the first week is Processing week, it is still counted time-wise.

4myGem, You will be getting a "Form Letter," from your daughter. This letter will have your SR  address, ship and division number. It will also tell you your SR PIR date. The Form letter arrives after "The Kid Box." LoL. No, your kid is not in it, just more laundry for you to do.
Make sure you keep your Form Letter. This has the parking pass code on it for Great Lakes Base. It also has useful phone numbers and a short one sentence message from your seaman recruit.

Aloha!  My daughter arrived at BC on 06/23/11, how do I know what ship/division she's in?  Also what's her PIR date?  I'm guessing it's 8 weeks from 6/23/11 which lands on 08/19/11 is that correct?

gsskygirl, When you find out your son's address, you can mail him a phone card. I mailed my son several phone cards during boot camp. The phones there use up a lot of minutes even if the call is short.

One thing to keep in mind. When they arrive they are given a NEX card with $150.00 already on it (will come from their paycheck later) They can use that card for items they are allowed to purchase such as: stamps, paper, phone card, personal hygiene products, etc. They can't go to the NEX anytime they want so they may not be able to get something they run out of such as stamps at the time they need it. Of course they will borrow and lend with each other so that they get by until the next visit to the NEX. If you want to send stamps send some if not I wouldn't worry about it, they will have the opportunity to get them from the NEX soon. :-)

gsskygirl:   My son wrote home on navy stationery. Said he had stamps too.  But some send them stamps.  He may have bought his.  Some send paper for them and they use it, some don't (mine didn't...I sent it).  But he should be able to get paper.

They can also buy a phone card in the NEX up there...but helps if you send one.  Activate it first so they don't have to take time to do that when on the phone.

There are some things that you will be able to send later on besides letters. Just do not send care packages. They may ask for paper, envelopes and stamps later. If the write as much as they can they will run out of the paper and envelopes given to them when they first arrive. It is okay to send these item if they have asked you for them. You can send stamps anytime. You can also make address labels to send to them. I made labels with our address on them and her boot camp address on labels as well. I even made a few with her grandparents, boyfriends, and best friends address' because I knew those would be some she would use. It saved her a ton of time which gave her more time to write. Later when it is closer to PIR they (the girls) may write and ask you to send simple makeup, a small hair dryer, straightener etc. Especially if they are in the performing division. And if the wear contacts you can send their contacts and a small bottle of solution a week or 2 before PIR. They will only be able to use them for Pics and PIR but they are allowed to receive them. Just put them in a small padded envelope and write on the outside what it is and that it is for PIR.
