Here is a link that you will need to check out. It is a FAQ about PCS moves and what $$'s are available.

My Base Guide

Space A Travel Eligibility
Ok, this is a very important link and I hope it stays valid if I forget to update it. Just so everybody knows, legal dependents are now allowed to travel Space A while their military sponsor is on deployment orders. If you don't know what this is it is very simple. You can fly at little cost almost anywhere in the world on a government aircraft. You sign up on a list and wait for your number to be called. So, if your sailor is deployed to say, Japan, you can jump on a Space A flight to Japan for say 30 dollars. I don't know the exact amount, but it is cheap. Take a look at this, Google Space A travel, you will get all the answers you need. If you have more questions, ask.

Gman - We will be married by the time I move with him (:

CCity - gotcha. Wow! I guess that's another Navy aspect I was a little naive about. My boyfriend is on hold waiting to start A school and then he will go to C school in P'Cola, also. After school, we will get married. Then, I will move with him. :)

annamichael, unless you have children with your boyfriend it will not get approved. It is for dependents, sorry.

If they are still in training then it is harder than it is if they weren't in training. They have to apply for their brown bagger status no matter what though. They have to go talk to some one and fill out a form with them. After they put their request in then it will be processed. My husband said one guy put his in and its been a month and hes still waiting. It just depends if they feel that they should live off base or not. My husband got a lecture when he went in and asked to put in his brown baggers status. They asked him why he's so special and all that. So it's a process. And while they are in training you aren't allowed to live on base with them. so its best for them to try to get their brown baggers if you want to live with them. How long is your husband's school for?  Because it's A school and C school and all of their training that your not allowed.

Gotcha. So they have to apply for that? My boyfriend and I just assumed after school they would just ask and be able to. :\ Is it difficult to get or take a while?

My husband is trying to get his Brown Bagger status. Does anyone else's husband have Brown Bag status and is still in training? If so how long did it take him to get it?

home port and where they will be stationed is the same thing.  If your spouse is on a ship and not shore duty the home port is where the ship is based out of.  My wife is shore duty so she is stationed at NAS Norfolk.

The orders didn't come until right before graduation.  I don't think it was more than a couple of weeks, so finding a place is on you.  Your spouse is supposed to get 10 days for house hunting when he gets to his new duty station.  Also, if you are on his orders, which you should be if you are married, YOU GET DLA.  That stands for Dislocation Allowance, and it took us literally months to get it because the paperwork people wouldn't give it to her.  I insisted because I know the regs, I am prior service.  If you have problems, or your spouse has problems, tell him to get an E-5 or above in his chain of command involved.  The paperwork people need coaxing once in a while.

Thanks, thought so.

How close to their graduation (whether it's A or C school) do they get their orders for their home port and where they will be stationed? Do they give families time for looking at apartments/homes, etc?

Anna - "with dependent" includes the spouse.
