Thanks alot. what apartments do you live in? i was lookimg at some on the internet to just see how much they would be & was trying to figure out how close they are to the base. I dont have a car right now. But we plan on getting one. His old car is being sold wednesday & when he gets to A school he is buying a new vehicle. But i will get a decal. He is a rescue swimmer.
Kelsey-
It all depends on what he is going to school for. My husband was going for rescue swimming and he just dropped it because of how hard the schooling is. When they first get there they have to go through three different phases. They are not allowed to do certain things through each phase. If he is going to school for air crew then he will have to go thro flight school before he goes to A-School. To be able to live off base they have to get something called brownbaggers. All they have to do is fill out some information. It's easy to fill out but it is hard to get. If he is still in flight school then he will not get brownbaggers unless for some reason you need help. like if your pregnant, have a disorder, or a newborn baby. When they get into A-School they can then put in their request for brown baggers and people usually get it when they are in A-School. You do have to be married but they will not let you live with him on base. While they are training you aren't even suppost to live here, but most wives do. So they will not allowed to live with them on base until he finishes his training. But they will give you basic living allowance. For us we get about 1200 a month for it. So getting an apartment after you get married is your best shot. As soon as you get married you guys can start collecting basic living allowance because you do not live with him. So that will give you enough money to get an apartment. Even if he cannot live with you right away you can live in an apartment by yourself in P-cola until he can. That is what I did with my son. My husband is just now allowed to live with us. I do not think they will give him time off to get married tho. So you will have to do it over the weekend or something. Theres a lot of benefits for being married in the military. You get health insurance, really cheap dental insurance, housing allowance, and they get extra food money each month for you The only thing that sucks at first is that they do not pay for your move. So you will have to move here out of pocket. I hope this helps. If you have any questions just ask. I live in an apartment right down from the base in pensacola.
same with monica - i live in p'cola with my husband and in order to be eligible for brown bagger he had to change his page 2 to our new address. we are currently receiving pensacola BAH and my husband is in training, currently on hold for RSS.
deanacakes - beware if you're looking online at available apartments. they can be very deceiving! it took us awhile (and a great deal of help from his parents) to find a decent apartment in the area that we could afford. shoot me over a message and i'll send you the name of the apartments we're at. we've been here since late january and enjoy living here :)
getting around sucks without a car. the taxis are expensive. there is a bus that does go to the base though.
I don't know about the apartments to avoid. I would ask around on the other P-cola forums also.
Be careful buying a vehicle down there. The dealerships see Navy students and think easy money and high interest. There are some places off limits, make sure your sailor checks with his command and gets the green light if he gets a loan. They are supposed to check out the terms and loan before it is signed so that you guys don't get shafted.
