HAPPY EASTER from Guam
New SR. Wife- We are in Polaris Park (Townhouse style homes) and I am very happy with our house! It's 2 floors and about 1,100 sq/ft of space, and the kitchen is smaller than I'd prefer, but still definitely manageable. I do a LOT of cooking from scratch and plan to get into bread-making as soon as our stuff arrives, so that was a major concern for me, but I think it's workable. Everything is very clean and newer/updated look, with newer appliances. There is no A/C in most units but from what I understand it doesn't get very hot here, only a handful of days during the height of summer when it gets over 90F. There is plenty of room for my toddler to play, and some nice yard space in the back. We have a 2 bedroom house and the second bedroom is a decent size, it will more than do the job when we move our boy in there. There is also a fair amount of storage space in the house, on both floors. And yes, we got approval for the Navy to pay for our travel and moving expenses, we just still need to submit our receipts and weight tickets once our household goods arrive late next week. It was a little bit of a pain in the butt to get find the right information about *how* to do that, but there are a few people in the various offices who really do know their stuff so you just have to keep asking questions and be assertive about being taken care of. I definitely understand needing family around for the birth, I hope all of that goes smoothly for you! And when you do make it out here, we'll be around so we should meet up. I know how tough it can be sometimes with a newborn so please let me know if there's anything I can do to help as you get settled in or even later. Especially since I'll have to ropes mostly figured out around here by then! :)
SubWife2011- We had hardly any wait at all. Although one of his Petty Officers didn't have his facts straight and told him his orders "weren't the right ones" when he got them and that he would have to wait for the "official" ones that he would be handed on paper (rather than what was already up on Bupers), so we sat on our hands for about 3 weeks thinking we still had to wait. But then a shipmate told him he was able to get his wife out here with those same orders so he did some more asking around, showed his orders to people at Fleet and Family Support, Family Housing Welcome Center, and I can't remember the name, but the office that handles dependent travel expenses. They told him those orders were plenty fine and that we could get moving even though he wasn't quite done with BESS yet, because I was essentially "homeless", and staying with family. He did have to get the permission signed off by the Chiefs though. Anyway, he got those orders after Test 2, if I remember correctly. Maybe a little earlier. Once he got the process rolling, he told me to get packing on Tuesday of that week, I was on the road on Saturday, and he had an appointment for us at the Belfour Beatty leasing office on Monday. They had 2 units available to show that day, one in Polaris Park and one in Trident Park. We took the one in Polaris Park and got keys that same day. They actually rushed to get it ready over the weekend when they heard we were coming and it was ready half an hour before we arrived for our appointment. We had a very good experience with the Resident Specialist, she answered all of our questions and was very helpful. I was actually rather shocked that it all happened so quickly, but I'm very happy with our house! She did say that recently they have been filling up to the point where they have fewer and fewer units available at any given time (occasionally they have none and there is a wait list) but even so if you're coming in the next few months I would guess there wouldn't be a very long wait at all if any. Like I said from the time that my husband first called Housing to when we signed and got keys was barely a week. But definitely get the paperwork started as soon as he has orders just in case, don't wait around until whenever you want to show up. As far as when they get their rate, is your husband SECF? Mine got his about 3 weeks in, and I heard it usually happens around 3-4 weeks in. (I *think* that goes for other sub rates too, but don't quote me on that) I also hear that if they are more likely to get a rate if they are assertive and really sound like they want it. My hubby really wanted FT, told them that was what he really wanted to do and that's what he got.
MamaMiri- I'm not in Groton right now ;( as much as I want to be there...I can't be there until June because I need family help when I deliver my baby ;) We're also looking at on base housing as well. They were going to give us a townhome in Natillus Park III but I told them that we can't make it to Groton by May 20th (the last day that they can hold the house for us). Do you like your home? What neighborhood are you in? Did you get the Navy to pay for your travel expenses and your move?
since your hubs is still in boot he'll move first then you'll be next, so house hunting is feesable.
yea Tanya made one she is the only member though :/
