omg trident park housing is gross i hated groton housing

bangor housing is NICE well the hosuing area i was in was nice thee is 3 areas. 1 housing is off of base and i do not recommend getting in that housing cause while i was there a few peoples cars got broken into and from what i have heard it was a bad neighborhood cause there are no gates.. i lived on base cannot remember which it was but the road was grayback and the housing down in that area is NICE NICE and the neighborhoods are clean.. the other housing is what the housing office called the other ghetto besides the off base housing ( i did not call it that the office managers called it that) i had a friend who lived in that area and they liked it just fine but they loved my place cause it was nicer and bigger.

housing includes dishwasher and refrigerator everything else you have to buy.. bah includes rent and utilities (lights, water, trash, and maintenance) renters insurance you have to purchase, from what i know housing has there own renters insurance but it only covers so much and when we took estimates it didn't even cover half of our stuff and when we moved it didn't cover our stuff so we got a separate renters insurance to keep our stuff covered.

So as for on base housing in Groton...what did you guys have to purchase (washer/dryer, microwave, etc.)?  We want to save some money and not use all of the BAH but also don't want to be stuck with a horrible place either ;)  Does the BAH really cover everything for on base housing (rent, utilities, renter's insurance)?

Thanks for sharing that, Elisabeth! It's great to hear a variety of experiences. I'm sure as long as we go in with eyes open we'll be fine. :)

Thanks! I've been scouring their website (subasehomes.com) and know exactly which neighborhoods we qualify for by rank and family size, and we plan to drive around the neighborhoods to get a feel for them when I visit next weekend. I really appreciate the advice!

If you can, I would contact them asap and request to get put on a waiting list for some of the nicer neighborhoods they mentioned.  If you mention the names and "know" what you are talking about, they'll work with you more.  I wish I would have known more about it bc we went in blind...they definitely took advantage.  I would just say (and yes, it's a lie but...)  "Look, I know you guys have some empty units in Polaris and Nautilus bc you showed them to my friend last week."  (A friend, meaning a civilian friend...because like I said, they try to get civilians into those houses first bc they can charge them more rent.)   I guarantee if you say that, you'll trap them, and you'll at least have more of a chance at avoiding Trident Park.  Hope this helps!  I really wish I would have had this advice before I moved to Groton.

Wow, good to know. I had heard before about avoiding Trident Park, but I didn't know it was that bad. Any good strategies for being put where we want? I'm not sure I would know how to counter it if they told me there just aren't any other units available.

All I can say, is that if you are going to live in Groton, stay away from the housing neighborhood called Trident Park.  It is the oldest of neighborhoods and they always try to put ppl in it bc it's cheaper for them to fill it.  Balfour Beatty runs all the housing out there.  Take my advice and demand to be put somewhere else, like Polaris Park or Nautilus Park.  We had a multitude of problems from mice nests, bugs, stove/fridge that broke on numerous occasions...and the houses are just NOT nice.  Throughout our whole 2 bedroom home, we had white gross tile floors, except for the stairs.  The stairs had nasty brown berber carpet that literally smelled like old feet.  The walls are caked with paint, windows don't open right...I could go on and on.  We cleaned our house from top to bottom before we moved in and the water was BLACK!!  The only thing about Trident Park is that they don't take your full BAH, and you pocket about 300 extra a month.  Honestly girl, I don't think it's worth it.  Hope this doesn't scare you-  just consider it a warning/favor.  I can't wait to get outta here!!  Oh, and be careful too because the leasing ppl will lie to you and tell you they don't have any other units beside Trident.  You really have to fight bc there were plenty of empty units in the nicer neighborhoods...they just want to rent them out to civilians bc they get more rent money.  In Groton, anyone can live in Navy housing bc it's privatized...

A little derail but...what happened with your housing in Groton that it's so awful? Hubby is there now and I'm headed there in a few more weeks.

Hi ladies- I just posted a discussion about housing in Bangor, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated!  We are currently in CRAPPY housing in Groton, CT and could use some advice before we move in a couple weeks.  Thanks!!
