Hi, it's been a long time since I've posted anything on N4Ms.   my son Matt is a nuke and been in the Navy 9 1/2 years. His first boat was the New Hampshire. His first day with her, he found that the only thing that was put together, was the engine room and it had nothing in it. He wasn't qualified to even answer the phone. But he's a Plank Owner and proud of it! Lots of hours, getting his quals on top of helping to building the boat. She is where he earned his Dolphins and his marriage ended. He had a hard time watching her go out to sea without him, when he was preparing to be  transferred.

He's been serving at Norfolk for the last 4 years, as a Rad Con Tech, which attached him (off and on) to the sub tender Emory Land, that was temporarily based in Guam.

But now, he is preparing for a new assignment. He has orders for the Jefferson City, this fall. I have to say that I had hoped that he would be able to continue being based on the East Coast. But the Navy had a different idea. San Diego is a long way from southern Indiana. I have a hard time when it's a year or more between visits.

Hello, my son Matt is a Nuke and has his orders for joining the second boat of his career, USS Jefferson City, this fall. He will have been in the Navy 10 years this January. His first boat was the USS New Hampshire and he is a Plank Owner with her. When he first arrived there, the only thing there was the engine room and nothing was inside it. ( Pictures from the commisioning of the New Hampshire are on my page.) It's the closest thing he's experienced to having a baby, so when he had to watch her go out without him, he had a hard time. Since then he's been serving as a Rad Con Tech in Norfolk, which meant that he had to attach twice (a least) for about 4 months each time, to the sub tender USS Emory Land. Which gave him the opportunity to see and experience things that the surface dwellers do. (He calls them "Targets")

I had hoped that he would continue being an" East Coast Sailor", but the Navy has had a different idea. I hear that the base in San Diego is beautiful.

hello!  my sons name is matthew (Nuke)also and he is on the USS Jefferson City now.  july 19th made it 3 years he has been in counting school.   it will be nice to have another mom on the same boat!!lol

My Son will be graduating in October from A School - he has been assigned to the USS Maryland Gold Crew - any other mom's out there?

hello all!!

welcome dean and cath!!  good luck to your and your sailors!!

Our sailor son is on the USS Nevada, Gold Crew, MT2.

My grandson, Dylan, will be finishing with his "A" school in Groton, CT on Oct 24th, 2014 and has received his orders.  He got his first choice of Honolulu, Hawaii and will be serving aboard the USS Buffalo SSN715  He is a MMS (Machinist Mate).  We, his family, have so much to learn about Navy life and are looking forward to his journey.  So excited for him.  Anyone else out there whose son might be also serving on the USS Buffalo, give me a shout out and hopefully fill me in on what to expect.

Congratulations to your grandson Bandit1998! My son arrived in Hawaii the end of May, but is on a different "boat" he's assigned to the USS Columbus SSN 762. Working hard, studying hard...as he continues the journey toward earning his dolphins.

I also enjoyed the article Cath, very interesting, thank you for sharing!

Quick question:  Why do they call subs "boats"?

Because of their size. Ships are bigger. At least that's what my sailor told me.

hello all!!

bandit--welcome!!  congrats to your sailor!!  it is nice to hear  when they are assigned someplace they like.  good luck to him as he starts another adventure!!

thanks for the info on why subs are called boats!  I kind of wondered why also.
