My son did not give me the book but also told me not to read it until later. I, to this day, have not read it. Been almost 10 years. :)

Mark, I think the thing that struck me the most was their description of Kinnard McKee. The man I met was truly a southern gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor. He told wonderful and funny stories. He was a quiet man with that great southern drawl, but you alway knew when he walked in the room. I was a young woman who knew nothing about the military at the time. But when Adm McKee walked in the room I knew instictively that he was very much in charge of the world around him. He was in civilian clothes and I had no idea who he was at first. He always made me smile. The description of him in the book was right on.

Glad to hear you've found the book, Lyn - by the end, you'll find the book a lot more uplifting than anything. Submariners were very happy when that book came out, to lift the veil ever so slightly. It is still in print by the way, enjoy!

I've started reading a book called "Blind Man's Bluff". Its about the post WWII history of the submarine service. Its an old book and I don't know if it is even still in print. But it is a facinating book, but I will warn anyone who wants to read it that it does cover some of the more tragic aspects of submarine history. It gives wonderful insight into the birth of the Nuclear sub service and Adm Rickover as well as the cold war.

Nancy, My last e-mail was also encouraging. I really do miss him. I'm in the process of designing the basement renovation and I keep asking myself "what will Alex like." I know he won't even get to see it for maybe a year.
I keep wondering how the beard is going. I do hope he decides to shave before they get home. He probably looks like a Pirate by now. I told him in one of my e-mails that there is another sailor on the Miami who"s Mom is on N4Ms, but didn't tell him who it was. Not that he ever gets out of engineering anyway. I think the thing he likes the most about being a Nuke is that he doesn't have to share a bunk, ever.
