JoLene, my heart sank too as our sailor is out also. Very glad to hear your good news. Hang in there mom.
As for the questions about the ombudsman - they have a site here - ask away. I would recommend them to any one. They are an awesome group. If they don't know, they will get you connected.
Our sailor is married and we don't have contact but he has super gule on his communication skills.~s

JoLene: Thanks for the update. Glad you heard from your son. Mostly, was glad to hear that the Navy kept you so well informed. I'm sure others will appreciate that information. I've wondered how informed I would be. Once my son marries, I'm sure that info will go to his wife.

JoLene, Please share with us anything that the Navy allows. It helps to share and to talk it out. Especially since we all understand what you're going through.

JoLene, I hope your son is well. My son is on the Miami. Hopefully they will bring the Hartford home for repairs and you will get to see for yourself that he is OK. Maybe you can send him an e-mail and ask him to call home. They are certainly in port somewhere by now. I was so glad to hear that no one was badly injured. You are in my thoughts. All of us who have sons on subs know how you feel. If you need us, we're here for you.

A spelling throwdown! Can't say I've ever heard of Spelling Baseball, but it sounds interesting. One of these days, when your son returns from a patrol in mid-summer, the state park that someone has mentioned in the past for watching the boat coming in (Kitsap Beach State Park) also has a nice campground, and would be a great spot for you and your husband to camp the day before, especially if you're RVers. It is in a beautiful spot on the Hood Canal, just north of the base near the floating bridge.

Mark (dearest), I know you're correct about all the surfacing stuff (and Lyn)... I just meant that when you play with the little submarine on the Discovery website, you can only make it go up and down by emptying the tanks!

If I may freely paraphrase John Lennon, "The Navy is what happens while you're making other plans." Son originally thought an airplane ticket for today would be ok... then he calls us from the ocean to change it... we can only get one for Monday (Sunday is sold out)... the boat comes in on time (Friday)... meaning he could have flown today as originally planned. Ack! So now, I have to wait two more days to see him... drat, those commander-people, whoever they are!

And Mark, since you 1) called me "sweetie" and 2) self-corrected your spelling error, I'll put away my red pencil and you may have first turn when we play Spelling Baseball on the next rainy day. ;-) k.

The Adm is an amazing man. A true southern gentleman who told great stories. The kind of person you could sit and listen to for hours. So different from Adm Rickover. I was so glad when I heard that Adm McKee had taken over the Nuclear Navy. He never talked down to anyone. He just assumed that if you didn't understand the shorthand, that you were intelligent enough to figure it out sooner or later. For an about to be Navy wife, it was like graduate school for a Nuke wife. Forgive me for taking this walk down memory lane.
