Happy New Year!!!

Yes KayeS, good advice to all, read the pages section. I reread it the other day and accessed some of the sites. Some of it could be updated, from 2011.

Folks,

PLEASE read the "Pages" (far right-hand column), before:

  • Asking questions (might save you some time)
  • and especially before ANSWERING questions! (Keeps you from giving an incorrect answer)

For the last few inquiries, I'd recommend:

  1. Submarine Schooling in Its Various Forms - NUKES DO NOT GO TO GROTON.  They do not attend BESS.  They depart Great Lakes directly for Nuclear Power Training school in Goose Creek, SC.
  2.  Fast Attacks vs. Boomers vs. Carriers - Overviews the different vessels with a generalized pro/con description of each.

Oh, and Happy 2016 to everyone!.......k.

ELO. My son is a EM on a fast attack, currently on deployment. He called home both Thanksgiving and Christmas from Japan. He emails sporadically also and I can email him everyday. He likes that connection to home.

My son is a MM on the Newport News.  He does alot of maintenance in port and on a underway.  He also had to do cranking(washing dishes), stand watch and work on getting his dolphins by being certified on all parts of boat.  They left for his first deployment first week of this month.  No contact yet and I know it will be spotty.  His girlfriend and I have been sending emails every couple of days but who knows when they will get them.  I hope this helps.

My mm is assigned to a bot but hasn't deployed yet. Mucho, mucho maintenance is what they do all day long while they are in HI.

I do not know what mm's do on deployment, but boomers usually go out for 3 month with sporadic email contact. Fast attacks go out longer, but the port, which means sailors can call. Boomers return quietly, little or no advance notice. Fast attacks have home comings - you can greet the boat on its return.
Hope that helps

Welcome rtw1! You are in the right place for info and support. Our son has been in Groton since His PIR and he likes it. His rate is MM and has about 5 weeks left of A school then He hopes to get soft orders. Best of Luck to your sailor and THANK him for his service!
