Well he has a chief for a mom. I made each of my boys take a night to cook dinner, the other had to clean up after his twin, they learned "If I don't want a mess I better not leave a big one" They both love to cook.
ProudNavyMom - there are many reasons for the wait - the major one is having enough sailors to create a class.
Others can be medical - something flagged in their last medical tests - it happened to 2 sailors from my son's boot camp class - one sailors red blood count was too low, another had had an alergic reaction to shell fish. The latter was sent surface, but not until after BESS & A School graduations!
A third could be security clearance issues. Sometimes, not all of the interviews that needed to be done were done.
There might be others that I am not aware of.
My son arrived in Groton and got put on "hold" and has been for almost 3 weeks, he is getting very antsy because they haven't told him anything about why or how long he will be hold. Anyone have any experience and/or advice??
Thanks to those of you who replied to my post about my son's crank (galley duty). I appreciate the responses and the insight. He enjoys experiencing new things and he loves to cook and be in the kitchen so I don't know why he was so crabby. I think he was probably getting a lot of ribbing from the other guys and it got under his skin. Plus, this is a guy who loves to eat! He tries to find the fun in whatever duty he's assigned to so I won't find out what happen until he returns. I put him in the Lord's hands and He has never failed us! Thanks again Genie, MemeGaronsMom, Mark, PatL, Co-TwinSailorsMom and LoriM. I'm sure I'll have more questions!
Part of their confusion is that the MM A school for surface sailors is in Great Lakes, and many jump to the conclusiob that it's the same for submariners without taking the easy step of validating. They also tend to make the same mistake with the electronics related submarine schools, and the numbers of recruits they see that enlist for subs is so high that, in my view there is no excuse for not checking out such a basic thing. As you follow this group, you'll see the same question come up every few months :)
Going back to the food comments...those were fun to read, I enjoyed the stories shared! Thanks for sharing yours too Mark, I need to pass that one onto my son about the "frosty excellence." Pretty ingenious idea, leave it to you!
Congrats to your Sailors ladies on their extra hard work and receiving honors. Nice to hear "some" of those who are going the extra mile are rewarded, I realize they can only choose a few out of so many.
Mine referred to his galley time also as FSA / Food Service Assistant (in addition to crank). Genie-very cool about the bread, mine didn't do any cooking that I know of. He told us he had it down exactly how all his Chiefs liked their beverages...ice, no ice, creamer, black, no sugar etc....Wow, CoTwin I'm quite impressed your son enjoyed it because my son's opinion couldn't have been more opposite! He said, worst 90 days (or so) of his life, couldn't have went by fast enough. He even sent home the t-shirt he had to wear! I'm surprised he didn't have some kind of bonfire party on the beach where he threw it in...ha ha ha. Well, it's mine now and I am not throwing it away, any connection to my son's career I keep. When he comes home he leaves behind all these little extra "doo dads" from his uniforms for me. Stuff that is old or scratched, we use some of it for shadow boxes and just as keepsakes.
@Mark, thanks for the info about A school a few days ago. I did get a hold of my recruit's recruiter and he made a phone call and confirmed for me that he WILL be going to Conn. In his defense he is a newbie recruiter and just did not know I'm guessing. Anyway, thanks to all for the info. I'm new to this for subs anyway, my other son has been in almost three years and is stationed on a dock landing ship in Norfolk. :)
