For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Quals are short for qualifications. Sailors are ALWAYS qualifying for something! There are quals when they first get to Groton that they should start asap. I know a sailor in my son's group procrastinated and then was freaking out when he was running out of time to finish!

One of the bigger ones is earning dolpins (aka fish). That is started after they are assigned to a sub and should be finished in the first year at their assigned boat. It is in their best interest to do it sooner than later as they are NUBs (Non useful bodies) until they have them and have limited freedom.

By this I mean , like if they are "docked" in a strange place (say like Bangkok or somewhere) and have leave! Do they have rules? I don't want him out there going to all kinds of places (bars) and something happen to him? I know I sound like a nut (and some people might confirm that, when it comes to my son) but I just worry, he has never been out of his home state!! I imagine all kinds of things! They still don't let moms tag along do they? :) Thanks again for everyone's help!!!

Submarines come and go frequently so they are gone a lot but that also means they come back from sea a lot. Mine is back now from a recent underway that was about two months long. As for the sailors the only time they might feel nervous is at the beginning of joining the crew, and but their cheif will keep them so busy study and qualifying that the time will pass very quickly.

Comment by Cath Bubblehead mom on July 29, 2015 at 4:34pm: Hi Amy - you are smart not to worry about the next step! Yes, if he is submarine - the next step is Groton. My son is sonar and was assigned to a boat last October. The sub is still in dry dock in VA, so he had to go on a ride-a-long on another boat to get his quals! We had no idea what sub, when he was going or anything until we actually got an email from him.

I just ask him to let me know things when he can and not worry about when he's moving to GA, going out again or anything else!

I haven't been posting on here much because my son is still in Boot Camp, his PIR is 8/14 and I believe he goes to Groton CT after, not sure yet! I believe it will be about 1 year before he is assigned to a sub, he is going to be a sonar technician. I don't know what I will do then, I feel like he is protected now at boot camp (and frankly that is what has helped me thru this first part!) but when he gets on a sub and is so far away? I take comfort in your comments CO-TwinSalorsMom and wanted to say thanks! I hope we can all stay on this group, it really does help to have someone that has been through this. Just knowing that I can e-mail him and at least get something back once a week is a relief! thanks again and hope everyone has a great evening!
