SubMoms,

If any of your Sailors are stationed here in Norfolk, we would be happy to invite them over on the weekends. We minister to the Sailors here by inviting them over for meals, board games, movies, mini golf, etc. To find out more about us, check out our page on this site. :)

Duchess, my SIL went to a sub that was in the yard. He spent his first year and a half there. They started going outlast fall and I was surprised how quickly he earned his dolphins. Never fear it will happen

Duchess, just be patient. It just happens that way sometimes. Nuclear subs spend a lot of time in the shop, especially old ones. I am sure the command is aware of such considerations. They want Sailors to succeed. It took my son well over a year to get his dolphins. Now his sub has been in the shipyard for a year, preparing to be decommissioned. Not exactly the most exciting duty, or the most career-enhancing. He is talking about taking some classes while they are there.

Material condition, manning, and morale come under Operational Security. Be cautious about discussing such matters. Keep it vague. "For various reasons" is probably sufficient.

Be thankful for the "serious relationship". I have a couple of very eligible bachelors. By the time I was my Sailor's age, I was married with 3 kids. I'd really like a couple more DILs, and maybe some more grandkids in the not-to-distant future, but I can't do anything about it. Frustrating.

Hi all, haven't been on in awhile.  Son has been with his fast attack boat since Aug.  It came out of dry dock the week he got there.  Still many issues so they are behind schedule for getting completely online.  Also boat is shorthanded so no chance for ride alongs to get his dolphins.  I think I'm more upset than he is cause I see all the other moms sharing their sailors' accomplishments.  On the other hand, he is in first major relationship in his life which makes me happy.  Miss him terribly on the other side of the US, but so proud of him.

Please keep my son and his crew in your prayers, today, as after almost 3 years of their sub being in drydock for a complete overhaul, they are finally going out today for seatrials, which have been repeatedly delayed due to one problem after another. I know the crew is cautiously optimistic.

Hello Sub moms

Our grandson called his mom today with news. He’s assigned to the not yet completed USS New Jersey. Apparently it’s getting close, because on Monday they all have to be at a ceremony to Keel the sub. Yea. He said The ceremonies will be on a Facebook live feed. Does anyone know where I might find this page? He also got info regarding his first ride. :)

Our son says his reenlistment chit has been approved, so he will be staying in. They are still working out the terms.

Hi, Angela!  Welcome to our deep, dark corner of the Navy!  I'm the Admin for this group, but don't do much since folks here are really well-behaved and polite :-)  I'm a 12-year Sub Mom; my son is stationed in Bremerton, WA, aboard the USS Pennsylvania.

The best source of information for new folks is the "Pages," found to the right, under all the avatars.  These are documents, permanently stored, full of answers to common questions - and some you might not have even thought of yet!

Everyone here loves being helpful, but sometimes answers given aren't true for your sailor's craft or command.  The Pages try to give robust details, covering all situations.  Some of the links may no longer work, since they can change without notice, but overall the info is sound.  Again, welcome!

Thank you, WearLargeHats & CarlaB, I learned something.

They have money coming out of RTC. Learning to manage money is a key. Most children purchase a computer w/external hard dive. Phones can be taken away. A-School accommodations: 2 beds, 2 desks, mini frig and microwave. Pay attention to mess hall hours. As soon as she get to base try and do the standing guard be early to places/qual.'s. Daily inspections, duty depends upon number of students, every 5 days for duty, base crawls to halt over holidays. Banana Snapple is $1.+ at vending machines also considered the cool drink, this is where most of their money will go. Classes are competitive, encourage your child to be in the top 3 of their class. They pick 3 places. It's a 50/50 chance on your child picks/verses the field need.

Internet is a bitch. If roommate has it try to pay roommate half of their bill to share. Then when roommate leaves pick up internet @ $80.00 mo. Don't forget to end internet bill when you leave school. My child bought a vacuum cleaner to keep room clean then donated upon leaving along with the nerf guns from care packages, tax write off. Other children brought large TV had to figure out how to sell it or get rid of it when assigned to boat. Spread your wing on care packages for holidays or fun. Skype is fun.

Son is Fire Control, VA class. Has duty every 3 days (boat), base Pearl, E3 had the base sleeping as WearLargeHats on base/ground level, changed to a closed off sleeping compartment, common living kitchen room, shared bathroom and on a higher level (12thFloor) at E4 (Petty Officer third class). Can be hard for your child to get rank, when boat is in dry dock. Prepared for an old timer to get rank first. Don't let this depress your child. Takes longer to get Dolphins.

Loves job, has learn to sleep with constant noise, small town w/o stores. Everything needed is taken on deployment. Don't forget to pack chapstick, lotion to combat ashy skin, & moisture in nose for deployment. You dry out. Mail drops are very, very rare only cards. Communication, email can be good or bad, young wives will get communication stopped. Reply's on email state “DO NOT REPLY” means COB (Commander on Boat) read email. Parents & FRG (Family Ready Group) makes halfway boxes-a box from home halfway during deployment, get involved with your child boat. Supplies a long line formed, everything is loaded onto boat, all trash goes off boat, makes a long day for someone who has already had 8 hrs of duty + worked their shift. It sure takes stamina.
