This is good FYI on being stuck INSIDE a car. My son was in Ballston Spa doing his Prototype training. It was 1 am, he decided to go to the gym. When he finished, he got in his car, he did something strange and manage to trigger some anti theft mechanism resulting on all the doors getting locked. He could get his key into the slot but it wouldn't turn. He couldn't unlock his door or open the windows. Luckily his cell phone worked. He didn't want to call his roommates at 4 AM, so he call his mom and dad.

I was on the internet, looking for locksmiths, emergency BMW services, etc. Husband was doing all the calling. Every 15 minutes, we called him to report of progress. AAA said they didn't have a technician who would be familiar with this problem. Most of the locksmiths don't "unlock" cars.  Finally, we paid $125 to some BMW advisory. This guy sent us an email advising us to call the NY high way patrol. Ask them to us some contraption that slips over the glass so the patrolman can push down the window enough for my son to pass the car key to the patrolman. The instructions also included turning key in the opposite direction twice (I think). Apparently this disengages the anti theft mode and everything was back to normal. This was an older BMW. NY highway patrolman was wonderful and responded within 10 minutes.  By that time, it was 5 AM EST - we in CA were completely exhausted. He went home and slept like a baby.

Newer cars have ignition keys w/o a key that stick out. You push the "lock" and "unlock" button to open/close the doors. I have a newer foreign car. I learn that if the battery is very low (or dead), lock mechanism won't respond. There is a little notch that contains a "regular" key which can be inserted into the slot to open the car doors.

Kevsmom93, I think the lock/unlock button is by the radio so you can turn up the music and unlock your door to jump out and dance quickly to a good song. lol

"THE IN-DE-PEND-ENTS" sounds like a name for a movie! I'm sure we could all write a script for that one..lol  Yes, BunkerQB laughter is our best friend where our kids are concerned. You just can't take this stuff seriously :-)

My husband has been driving our son's old 1994 Ford Escort on occasion (our son's first car when he was 15 1/2) it has this ridiculous alarm system..because as my husband says you can't be too careful with a 94 Escort! Anyway, he went to get the mail one day and realized he couldn't because the alarm system wouldn't let him stop and get out while the engine was running! What the heck, we know our son knew how to work it but my brilliant husband couldn't figure it out...lol.

LoriM why is the lock/unlock button located by the radio? LOL! (hypothetical question)

Tina41, that is funny how you couldn't find the door handle. I just got a new car-chevy cruze and couldn't find the lock/unlock button. It ended up being on the front dash under the radio.

hello all!

bunker--love the car story!  on that note, my husband and I were looking for a car.  we got into a car and couldn't get out.  it was so funny!  the darn inside door handles were hard to find.  so I sympathize with your son!!LOL

BunkerQB, how do you lock yourself inside a car? Then again, it was 4 am--really don't want to know. lol

Shirl 6, it is ok to love yourself--you have to start somewhere.
