Thank you so much for the comments. That definitely gives us hope.  He's been a bit down since this whole process seems to be taking so long, and with no end yet in sight. But on the up side, he does enjoy being part of the legal team on staff and that wasn't something he'd considered before.  We actually have a long history of attorneys in our family so who knows - maybe a new rate to consider.

John and Yvonne

Thank you for the kindness you are showing our Sailors.  If he gets stationed in Virginia I'll get in touch.

Sandca890 and TexGal75,

We just read that your son is now stationed here in Virginia on the San Jacinto. And Tex, your son could also be transferred here as well.

We wanted you moms to know that My husband and I open our home on the weekends and invite sailors to come over and hang out. We get together on Saturday evenings at 5:00 and we feed them and play board games. On Sundays we provide a family style dinner at 1:00 with homemade bread and dessert. We do a variety of thing-watch movies or sports, or just get to know each other. We try and support them and the things they go through on their ships. To find out more about us, go to our page on this site . We would be happy to pm you our cell number to give to your sons so they can contact us . Or if you have their permission, we could contact them and invite them over.

Enjoy the Navy journey! Yvonne and John

Hi TexGal75, mine also has had changes since Bess. Similar blood issue he wears a red tag now & allergic to a vaccine. He stayed in the Navy & transferred to a ship in Virginia. San Jacinto. He seems very happy. They do combat activities & training he really seems to enjoy that was not available in sub program. My son keeps in contact w/ the friends he made in Groton. One in fact just got transferred & joined him recently. They really Turn it into a better circumstance & all work together. The comradery is amazing there. Hes made more friends & working hard to get into another rate. So there’s hope. I went through all your feelings & concern too. It will all be okay. :-)

Hi all. It's been a while since I chimed in with the group. I've been following all of the activity, and it's encouraging to see the journeys of all the other sailors.  Unfortunately, my Sailor has had a few bumps since BESS.  They discovered that he has a low blood palette condition which resulted in him being pulled from classes and into TPU for several months. He's been moved out of student housing, is part of "Staff" now and is in LimDu status until they complete the medical testing.  He knows that his case has to go before a medical review board, and that Sub service is no longer an option for him, but he is very concerned about being separated from the Navy completely.  If anyone else has been through this particular difficulty it would be nice to hear from you on how your Sailor managed it and how you as a family supported them.

Well the orders have been received and we begin. Thank you WearsLargeHats for helping me get prepared.  It's kinda bittersweet but an adventure.

Just shifted my participation to a whole new level.... and I thought I was ready, LOL!

Comment by CSW on October 23, 2018 at 9:37am

Well he said that was a bit drastic, probably their way of emphasizing they need to stay focused and get it right.  He is pretty stressed out because he needs to finish ELT but can't set up any other medical checks or anything until he knows his orders.  Change is always difficult but also when there are so many closure activities it makes it that much more stressful.  He did send us a package with a note saying it's been over a year since he's been home and he's ready.

Hawaii and Guam are OCONUS (outside continental US). The Navy will pay to ship 1 vehicle per year to/from OCONUS stations, but I don't think they pay in the 48. His orders will have specific travel, relocation, and reporting instructions. They will also assign a sponsor to help him get situated.
Wow, 8 weeks to qualify ELT! Of course I don't know how many watch quals that actually involves, or how specific that is to the particular equipment. It seems odd that they would surface a nuke-MM just because they couldn't qualify fast on ELT.

CSW Welcome to the silent world of submarines! Your son’s first year will be extremely busy. Once he qualifies for ELT he will also have to earn his “fish” or dolphins. It’s quite a long list of different “quals” or qualifications they must pass/earn within a year of getting to their sub. Probably the biggest thing to be prepared for is long periods of not hearing from them especially while on deployment and while he’s still a nub. One deployment I didn’t hear from my son for nearly 3 months. Things get better once he’s earned his fish. I believe that the navy will move his car for him but not positive on that being that he’s just out of sub school. My son did not have a car the first year or so he was in Hawaii. There’s great public transportation and lots of guys who had been there awhile had cars. Of course now, he’s been in 6 years, they move his car for him. Best of luck to you and your son!!

Wears Large Hats,

Also please thank your son for his service from all the other moms. We appreciate those who come before us and ours.
