Proud Mom - it depends on your son and the type of sub. My son is bad at communications to begin with, so I rarely hear from him anyway! He is on a Boomer. There is only 1 computer on board for 150 guys. And, they go silent for weeks at a time. So - for a 2 month deployment I usually get 2 or 3 emails!

@Proud Mom I think it depends on what type of boat he is on, with my husbands first boat (a boomer) I would get one email every few weeks. However, on a fast attack, I hear from him sometimes a few times a week (depending on how busy they are of course). But yes you will definitely hear from your sailor :)

Does anyone ever hear from your sailor while they are out in the sub? Just wondering bc my son will be leaving mid October and its driving me crazy already... This is going to be his first time, I'm sooooooo nervous, scared, worried etc.. If so how often?

welcome Bean My son is an nuke officer currently on his 2nd deployment. I am in western washington so I am lucky as when he is home I live only a couple hours from him.

Hello to MaineGrammy welcome back to the silent service.

ArchyMom I am thinking we meet in Olympia the other day I am right?

Hello to everyone,

I am back to being a sub mom.  Our son finished his Submarine Officer Advanced Course the end of June.  This week he is flying out to join his new sub.  He has been in the navy about 8 years and this will be his 2nd sub with a shore tour in between.  His family is staying in Groton as it will be the home port for the sub.

Have a wonderful day

Hi Bean, and welcome! I am in western Washington State. My son is Fire Control (FT) on fast attack out of Guam. Currently on first underway, so is probably VERY busy with quals as well as his regular watch. Sub life is very different from surface, especially for the families; not much news or information, as it's all classified, so about all you can do is get used to waiting and keeping your phone charged and at hand 24/7. Just keep in mind there are a whole bunch of us going through the same thing... you're not alone. :)

Hi Bean and welcome. My son has 20 years in. He has been at Kings Bay most of that time. I can remember waiting for his first assignment. I was a nervous wreck. Your sailor will do great and you have all of us moms here for you!

Fayegirrl4 we live in the Ohio Valley also and its been a weird summer. My sailors sub is in dry dock but I've been hearing about possible sea trials. Fingers crossed

Hello bean and Welcome!  I am rarely on  here ( not sure why the comments haven't been showing up in my emails..hmm) but decided to check in with everyone.

Our submariner has been in 3 years now ( wow...it kind of went by fast). He is still in Kings Bay and has one more patrol  then ( I think) he will be able to think about re-enlisting. He says he wants to switch to a fast attack boat, pending availability.  I think he likes his job, just has a hard time making friends and he is single.  I think many of his shipmates are either dating or married. So it's been tough on him.  His brother is on a LPD and currently OUT.  This is his first d and I pray all goes well.  There will be a few months where BOTH sailors will be NON-CONUS so I might be a bit crazy by then.

Hope everyone and their sailors are doing good. All is fine in SW Ohio, just HOT.
