They gave my son a pre deployment handbook to give to us too. It has everything and I mean everything in it. Don't fret.

We only learned of and heard from the ombudsman a couple of weeks before they go. She told us about mailing a halfway bag. Your sailor needs to put your name on the contact list. Your sailor will go to a pre deployment meeting and he will learn all of this and my son did get the packing list then and all other instructions.

We'll bcgoldy, William, and Blue Rock, just like I said, that is why we all have each other. One big hug to you all. Funny how my friends here at home have NO idea what we all go through with our sailors UNDER water and we don't know when, where, or for how long.

I all.  I just found out by accident that my sailor went underway sometime in the last 7 days. He called me on Tuesday of last week and didn't give so much as a clue.  I'm totally freaked out.  I figured i would get some kind of warning.  Guess not.  William in Nashua, I know just how you feel.

Comment by William in Nashua on May 21, 2014 at 4:00pm

That is a very thorough checklist but when my son is underway I have no idea when the submarine will be going out on patrol, where he will be and for how long, or when he is coming back.  I have no idea who the ombudsman is either.  Other than that we are all set though Lol.

You cant even imagine what a disorganized disaster it was when he left. He had not arranged for auto bill pay on his car or car insurance, he had not given the ombudsman the info to update who would be able to receive info if there ever is info. He had not arranged credit card payments ( i never even knew he had credit cards ugh), I had to force him to give me the necessary account numbers and passwords to straighten things out and prevent him from having his car repo'd and ins cancelled! Unless you have been there you cant even imagine it, leaving the next morning with a few days notice and the check list is like 4 pages long of things you should really take care of ! So moms, Make Sure your sailors have updated the form on file with you listed as emerg contact because more than one person can be on that list but ONLY if your sailor designates it that way. My son only put his dad and his dad and i are long divorced! So i am lucky my relationship with his dad is good and he will share info with me. The sailors can update this info any time but it is bad for them to wait till last minute when so much has to be thought of and done! Also make sure they have shared with you their $$ info if they dont have a wife or girlfriend who would take care of their banking / bill paying while they are on a "silent" underway.

thank you ladies and Susank you dont post too much ! Your post and all the others have really been helping me feel connected to my son in a weird way. At least i am connected to other Navy moms who understand how hard this is.

You are sweet mrsb. I do love to read everyone else's posts. My family thinks I am addicted to N4M but oh well it works for me:)

susank you don't post too much!!  We all enjoy reading each other's posts!

bcgoldy, welcome!  Even though you've been here watching it's nice to meet you!  I absolutely dread the time when my son is underway, but am so glad to have all of you here.  I will surely need the support.  Couldn't ask for a nicer group of friends!

bcgoldy--it is nice to hear from you!!  welcome to the "silent" world.

Spunky, thanks for posting that!  I'm going to print it out when I get home from vacation and send a copy to my son.  He doesn't have a boat yet but will in a few months.  Am sending it to my "adopted" Sailors as well!  :)
