Jackie, my son is on the North Carolina. This is week 4 since we've heard anything from him. It was great to get the package on Sat. - it felt like a gift from him (even though it is his)....crazy mom! The fabric of the suit is like nothing I've ever felt before!
That's all well-documented, between his book and widely acknowledged news reports, kevsmom :) -
regarding duty station assignments: usually the whole first enlistment is spent with one boat at one homeport. Boats will sometimes change homeports, though - and also, either by request, or by needs of the Navy, someone may be transferred to another boat (usually in the same homeport). You definitely cannot count on anything with certainty.
mrsb - your son will stay at his first station until his sea duty rotation is up. Then he will have a shore duty rotation of 3 years. My sailor is into his 2nd year of shore duty right now.
Kevsmom93 - I believe they have to be an E-4 or E-5 to live in off base housing; can't remember for sure how long my sailor has been off base!
My sailor is getting married on the island in a few weeks and just found out today that they house they made an offer on over the weekend was accepted. So he and his bride to be will be homeowners in a couple of months. Housing is very expensive there, but they usually sell pretty quick and gain value easily from what I am told.
I will be visiting the island shortly.
karent0801-- What sub is your son on? My son is on the La Jolla and just had a suit and tux sent home also made in Singapore. They are beautiful... and definite worth the price and shipping.
hahaha ProudNavyMom!! yes I am! I've only taken a couple of pictures but I'll try to be better! :)
mrsb, YOU ARE IN HAWAII???!!!!! You lucky you!!!!! I hope you are taking lots of pics!!!! and share!!!!! HAHAHAHA
Have fun!!!! Big hug!!!
William in Nashua- How long has your son been stationed in Hawaii? How long before they can live in their own housing? Very curious how this next stage works our son is home for leave after graduating A School and he departs for Hawaii this Sunday. I bet your son is looking forward to having his own space (shared or not) :-)
What a great purchase for your son to buy karent0801. Mine is buying all sorts of stuff while he's home. The UPS guy has been making regular visits. Not sure what he plans on doing with all his new toys. But it's his money and if it's making him happy fine by me.
Very interesting! So I'm assuming that is unclassified info you've shared with us Secret Agent Mark :-)
karent0801 That is awesome. I understand that a lot of those suits are made without much measurements! As an experienced seamstress I can not do that without measuring! Also, the price paid for the suits is probably far less then I would charge, so probably a very good deal to get one made over there if the opportunity and time allow!
Mark, or anyone, when they are assigned to their duty station is that where they stay for their entire enlistment or do they get moved around? A mom asked in the chat room and I don't know the answer since mine is still in A school. Thanks!
My son will be living in a house near the Marine base it is about a 25 minute or up to 45 minute drive to the Pearl Harbor sub base.
