OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I have two announcements. First, we're proud to say our son, a 15-year active, 1st Class PO, was commissioned as an officer on July 1st! He's a "mustang" now (meaning an enlisted-turned-officer) and "old" for an Ensign. :)

Secondly, I am no longer a "Sub Mom." :( His new billet is aboard the carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln.

With this change, THIS PAGE NEEDS A NEW ADMINISTRATOR. It's NOT a difficult job; just make the settings send all posts to your email address and monitor them. If someone has a question that is given incorrect information or OPSEC is violated, merely step in and give correction (politely), plus delete any inappropriate content.

This is a very "well-behaved" page. In the 15 years I've been here, I've only had to delete 2 comments and correct a handful of incorrect information.

PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU'D BE INTERESTED IN THIS ROLE. I'll give you my email address and cell phone #, so I'll always be a reference source. I've made many friends and contacts over these years.

Comment by Mama4dog on August 30, 2021 at 1:34pm: Another useful thing to request from the ombudsman is the instructions for sending a package to your sailor during deployment (for when they come to a port) and for emailing your sailor while on deployment or a long underway.

My experience with this on the now-decommissioned Bremerton:

The ombudsman will not respond to anyone who is not on their list. For parents at least, this means that your sailor will have to request that the ombudsman put you on the list.
For security reasons, there are things that the ombudsman can only tell face-to-face. You wont be able to find out (but can sometimes guess). If you guess, say nothing.
The FRG was very helpful with information such as halfway-box contents, and making sure that unaccompanied sailors weren't left out. The private Facebook group was also helpful. That said, they were very much oriented toward supporting spouses and children, and not so much distant parents.
I think it is common for the ombudsman to prepare a Deployment Guide for families. An unaccompanied sailor probably will not think to send you one, nor will the ombudsman. The ombudsman nicely sent me one when I asked. There were only 2 pages, concerning OPSEC and communications, that were useful for someone 4,500 miles away, but it makes a good keepsake. Particularly as that was the last deployment of the "Badfish".

Comment by IL Matt's Mom on August 29, 2021 at 5:40pm: Hi Catherine. The ombudsman and FRG serve 2 different roles. The ombudsman is an official communication channel to/from the command. The FRG is a community working together to support the sailors and the sailors' family.

I found that FRGs have a Facebook group. Your son or the ombudsman should grant you access.

Ask your son to specifically ask for the ombudsman contact info and add you to the ombudsman's contact list. He should also request to join the (private) Facebook group for the FRG. I had to push my son to be proactive and the ombudsman and FRG were reactive after the push.

Comment by Shea on August 29, 2021 at 9:17am: Hello Catherine. Welcome to the sub world. WearsLargeHats is correct. Every command is different. Also in my experience some ombudsman are better than others. My sons first command was a fast attack and they rarely communicated. His second was a boomer and they were fantastic. They actually did the half way bags for that sub. I’ve had no experience with FRG in the 10 years my son has been in. I hope that your first experience is a good one.

Comment by Catherine on August 29, 2021 at 2:29am: Thanks. Son says he’s doing lots of paperwork now that he is assigned to a boat so not sure what has been submitted and waiting to hear from Ombudsman. Would the FRG reach out or do I need to find out how to contact them myself?

Comment by WearsLargeHats on August 26, 2021 at 2:09pm: Catherine, I would recommend getting in with the Family Readiness group for your son's boat. Also, it would be good for your son to get you on the Ombudsman's list.

The FRG typically packs halfway boxes for deployments. There are some universally favored goodies, but each command has their own rules for what is and is not allowed, particularly when it comes to food or entertainment items.

Comment by Catherine on August 26, 2021 at 2:00pm: UNDERWAY TREATS? Son finished A school and assigned to a fast attack sub. What are some good treats to send him that he can pack to take on sub with him or to put in any small boxes they may be allowed to receive during deployments? I know their space is very limited! He'll also be doing his quals so won't have lots of free time so not thinking of movies, etc., more like what would be awesome food treats, hygiene items, etc. to have. For himself or that he could use to barter and give to others? I've found some info about this in the forum bur would appreciate more recent info. Thanks.
