While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Comment by Cath Bubblehead mom on February 24, 2016 at 12:52pm: MaryBeth, If this is his first underway, then I am guessing he does not have his dolphins yet. If that is the case he will be VERY busy! At some point he might email you - that will give you his email address. You can email plain text - no pictures - to him, but do not expect many responses - continue to email.

Hopefully you are on the Omsbudsman's list, you may or may not be able to send a halfway box (gallon baggie or showbox depending on the boat regulations) the omsbudsman will have that info.

As an OPSEC rule, we do not put exact departure or returning info in text, emails or posts. Usually - "leaving soon" or "arriving soon". Hope that helps

Comment by mrsb on February 24, 2016 at 12:26pm: Good morning MaryBeth! All I can say is remember that no news is good news! I was very worried about my son's first underway, he wasn't worried at all, was looking forward to it! The lack of communication is difficult but you can send him emails. He won't be able to respond right away but he can read them. When I got the first one from my son I was in tears, just because it was so cool that he was emailing me from underwater somewhere! He will be safe and extremely busy, has to work on quals so they keep the new ones busy with that. He won't have any time for much else except sleeping and eating. He will be fine, and so will you!

This is his first deployment so I don't know what to expect nor does he. Somewhat nervous, both of us, about what to expect. He doesn't know how long he will be underway as he flew to HI while his boat was already underway. He is going to call me tonight before he goes silent. Any advice to share with me ladies would be greatly appreciated!!!

But I just wanted to say to the moms who responded to Cath's request for help that we have some of the best mom's out there! Who would have ever thought to send a "halfway" box full of goodies & the texts and pics, really sweet! You could even theme them for the different holidays coming too; St. Patrick's Day, Easter and don't forget to add some treats for the 4-legged ones too!

Cath Bubblehead, would your daughter-in-law leave the dogs at a kennel or with someone, or even have someone come to the house to feed and let them out? You could always send her some thinking of you cards or even a "halfway" box filled with some goodies. Good luck.

I was looking online for ideas and am surprised there is not much out there - except for spouses.

He is in Conn, she is in South Carolina, her family is in England, and I'm in Indiana. One thing that I do when is he is on deployment or underway - I send her by text an amusing story of when my son was little or I will text her a picture of him when he was a little guy. Both she and my son have said how much they appreciate it. My son has requested that I continue it. She says that she looks forward to the texts messages and they make her feel like my son is close to her.
