That for all the information on phones. I am going to talk to my carrier. My son is currently in a boat somewhere and would hate to get a large bill.

Oh there are plenty of aps to call on, the one my son used was magic jack I think, but he even said there are better ones. When my husband and I went to Jamaica this summer, we used Facebook messenger to call out to our kids. It worked perfectly and we were able to speak to them as if we were on a regular phone call.

TwinSalorsMom, tell him to put it on hold. My son is on my phone plan, so I put it on hold for him, and I took it off hold before he got back. He used wi-fi when in port to call us and facetime, whatever. You do not need the phone to be activated to use the wi-fi. It worked out perfectly for my sailor son who was deployed on a ship. (I have two sailors) There is no worry about accidentally using international time, and we were still able to communicate with him every time they hit port. Put it on hold. You wont be sorry, I promise!

My sailor used his phone on his first deployment and ran up a $1200 bill in a short time by texting from Guam. We talked him into using International calling cards or Skype instead. Putting his phone on hold was good until he got back and couldn't use it to call us when he came home. He had to use someone else's to call us and AT&T!

So why do some think it is not a good idea to put it on hold? He wants to save his $50 a month.

I put his twins phone on miliary hold for both his deployments. They are on my plan and they pay their own phones. Putting them on hold they bill is $0 for all of deployment. They still can text and use the camera I think. Good to know about the ap for free calls. also facetime. I would like to know the ap.

William, I think you are right about phone calls.  Another fun fact is the number of fake cell towers being found outside military installations. (just google "fake cell towers")  I'm sure the sailors are told daily not to say much about anything because you really don't know who is listening in.

Comment by Shea on November 11, 2015 at 2:16pm

We put my son's phone on hold and he used an app that allowed him to call for free.  Also if they have an iPhone and have access to internet like at one of the bases, etc then you can facetime which doesn't cost anything as well. I can find out the name of the app if anyone would like it.
