Question.  My son is deploying soon and since he will be gone for Christmas we wanted to get him somethings he could use on his sub.  He said they would be going through some cold water and needed things for cold.  I wanted to get him some sheets and maybe a blanket.  I sent an email to his ombudsman to see if color mattered for either item.  She has not returned my email.  There are flannel rack sheets on the Fleet Sheets website but only in Navy blue.  Not sure if he can have blue.  Does anyone know if it matters the color of the sheets.  And any recommendation for a blanket for his rack.  I asked my son and his answer was, he actually did not know.  Any information appreciated.  He is on the Newport News.

I live in Colorado and will have my destroyer sailor home then, the sub one will be deployed. If he wants he could come here for a meal.

My son has no problem talking at length about life in general.

Just an info tidbit: My Husband use to be the Chaplain for Subcomron 1 while at the Sub base in Pearl Harbor. I hope your sons love it there-we did! :)

William, your phone conversations sound like ours. I have noticed the phone call doesn't last as long as they use to. I guess it just depends on if he is in a talkative mood or not.

Comment by CO-TwinSalorsMom on November 2, 2015 at 5:30pm

Yup, my phone calls are a lot like that. I did find out he passed quals though.

He has talked about the lack of oxogen and sleep. Makes his a tad loopy. But hey, he is a Colorado kid raised at 8K feet. Low oxogen should not matter.

Another thing about telephone conversations for the new Moms and Dads, that you probably were already told but does take a while to sink in -- they really can't talk much about their work on submarines, particularly not on a telephone call.  That might vary by boat or what their job is maybe, but my son cannot talk anything about his work or much of anything else about the submarine, at all. So I just say how is everything going on the boat?  And of course it is Fine.  Then I ask about a few other people I know from the boat and they are doing Fine too.   If he was working extremely hard he will say he is tired.  So we talk about his car, or restaurants in Honolulu and the like. Lol.

thanks scubagirl! Can you remind me of his name? If you've already told me please forgive the forgetfulness. :)

Thanks Yvonne.  I have given your number to him and I hope he will take advantage of it one day.  He will be gone for Thanksgiving, return for a few days and then off to deployment.  The saddest thing is he has not seen his gf since May and she works as a Athletic Trainer in FL and can not get to VA before they deploy.  He seems to be accepting it and the next time he sees her will be when they come back next year.  Plans are to ask her dad for hand in marriage and get married in the fall.  Sweet girl and I hope all works out for them.  You and your husband impact the sailors more than you know.  I was talking again to my son last night to remind him to please take advantage of your offer.  He was at the  NEX getting stuff for under way and deployment.

You're right Kaye; this will be the 3rd Thanksgiving and 2nd Christmas my son has missed, not to mention 3 birthdays.  Needs of the Navy!
