Well that is a good point Mark as he was already assigned to a boat based in Groton at the time, and the trainer is there.   He might have volunteered for it,  I just wrongly assumed that the nukes all had to do the escape trainer.

Enlisted nucs absolutely do not attend BESS, as William points out.  Nucs assigned to a boat in Groton may experience the escape trainer, but it is commonly waived for various reasons.  My son attended BESS in 2009 for Sonar Tech, and did not go through the escape trainer.  I was a nuc on subs in the 1980s, and nucs did not go through the trainer then.  I'm skeptical that the Navy would spend the money for travel to send nucs to Groton solely for the escape trainer.  I won't go into the reasons why, because it probably isn't appropriate for this forum.  Nuclear Power school is not considered a C school either, and all nucs since the nuclear training moved to Charleston have had their A school there.  Nuclear A schools before then were in Orlando for 10 years or so - prior to then, they had their A school in Great Lakes (where I had mine), but never in Groton :)

William - my son's friend was nuke and attended BESS & A School in Groton, then went to C school for Nukes. I think it varies. My understanding was that everyone that serves on a sub has to go through BESS (BOSS for officers)

Comment by William in Nashua on September 9, 2015 at 5:24pm

Nukes do not go to BESS at all, they learn the submarine stuff at the nuke schools.  So they go right from nuclear prototype school to the boat.  The one exception to that is nukes do have to go through  the submarine escape tower exercise at Groton just like everyone else on subs.   Groton is nice I actually liked Groton it is a nice easy drive and is really a Navy community.  Plus the whole base is submariners and it is really steeped in submarine history.    Good luck to everyone going to Groton.

My son is MMWep. He spent about 6 months in Groton before getting his PDS to Kings Bay. He did not get his orders until right before A school graduation. He has enjoyed his time in Georgia so far. Welcome to the submarine world. This crazy journey continues

Do you know if I should wait to send him his personal items until he lets me know?

Comment by Cath Bubblehead mom on September 9, 2015 at 4:29pm
Yes, depending on his schedule and card status, he has varying forms of liberty. White is the most restrictive.

To get on base, he has to meet you at the gate. Don't know where you are from, but the Nautilus museum is right off base and is very interesting!

Thanks a lot Cath.  He has told me something about that.  Can you visit him?

Comment by Cath Bubblehead mom on September 9, 2015 at 4:17pm

BESS is about 8 weeks A school and others in between vary in length. All in all, my son was at Groton for about 10 months - he is Sonar. Each rate is different, and then there is always the "wait" time to class up!

Comment by Biriam on September 9, 2015 at 4:14pm

Do you know how long he would have to be in Groton? That is going to be his A School
