985cat I am not saying anything other than the living spaces are thisclose on the Virginia class subs because I have been on the newest one in the fleet, and that is what I observed in person.  Not sure which straw man you are debating though.  In fact I have not commented on that news item at all -- yet.

Well I have been on my son's submarine which is currently the newest operational submarine in the Navy, and the corridors are so narrow that for two people to  pass each other  in the hallway you both have to face sideways, and squeeze past each other back to back.  They can put women in one berthing area and men in another but the concept of personal space does not exist.  And that was in the forward areas, I can only imagine how tight some of the areas must be in the engine room.

I don't believe that women shouldn't be on subs because of situations like this, but because the design of the boat is not condusive to coed living. Hopefully the design of newer boats will remedy this.

With no disrespect to anyones comments on here. Women have always been the subject and object of sexuality in our culture. You see it all over the Media, ( t.v..magazines, commercials, pop-stars)etc.Does that  mean we have become desensitized to it, yes, of course if your honest with yourself. I believe respect has gone by the wayside with the younger generation. One could argue its how we are raised. But its not all that easy.Think of the respect your Grandparents had in there generation. The way they acted, dressed, and addressed a woman. We can almost say and expect that boys will be boys. Not to sound sexist but how many of you have said, if a Man could only be a Woman for a day and see what she goes through, and does what she does, then he would understand. I am all for equality, I think a man should act like a Gentleman, and woman like a Lady. By thinking there is no place for women on Subs because of situations like this, is almost  to say " well boys just cant behave" and give it an excuse. Then we might as well take women off of all the Aircraft carriers, DDG's, Frigates, etc.. There goes half the Navy! As The saying goes "Shape up or Ship out"

You know - I'm all for equal rights, and if you are qualified for the job you should be allowed to do it - but I am also for common sense! I think that gets lost in a strive for "equality"!

I am good with all male boats!

985Cat - definately somebody's wife - my son is on another boomer - his commanding officer is the husband of one of those officers! He said he has been going down there frequently to make their lives miserable! (My son's boat is in dry dock in VA).

My son commented that they are starting to work on the culture - but it will take time. Unfortunately the subs are not very conducive to coed living!

Well said 985cat.  He made a very poor decision.

I had not hear about this until it was mentioned here.  Our son is on a fast attack, so no females there yet.  Unfortunately this will happen.  I am sure it happens on surface ships often, but this is only getting press because it was on a sub, and women on subs are news.  We may not think women on subs is a good idea, and most of our sons feel that way, but, women have been pressing to break the glass ceiling for years and this is just one of the few places that was left from breaking.

985cat, I just read about that-it's terrible!!!  I never thought it would be a good idea to put women on subs, my son doesn't think it's a good idea either.  Too much temptation there an obviously some young men didn't grow up.
