Thank you Rhonda8881....  I needed to hear about your time and lack of time with your son and how you deal with it.  We are their biggest fan.  Happy Thanksgiving!!

NAM now means Navy/Marine Achievement Medal. They are also awarded in the Navy's other department (lol) the Marines!!!

Thanks for the detailed explanation Kaye S. I would not have said it quite as god!!! It is awarded for going above and beyond more or less.
My sailor just celebrated his 8th anniversary with the Navy and we have only spent 2 Christmases together (last year was only because of a loss in the family) and a couple of New Year's. No Thanksgivings since 2005, no birthdays since then either. He has been in Hawaii for 7 of those years now and that is a little too far and expensive to do very often. And now he is married to a girl from Hawaii so I don't expect to spend many holidays with them in the future.

We as Navy moms have to learn to cut the cord and be happy that our children are happy and successful in their adult life. I learned that counting my blessings makes me a lot happier than focusing on the strife/sad times.  It does take time to get used to our children not being with us, but we are their biggest fans and need to support them in their journey.
Sorry if I am rambling on.  Feeling a little nostalgic this morning.

1) NAM = "Navy Achievement Medal;" awarded for exemplary achievement of some objective (e.g. patrol, inspection, deliverable, etc.)

2) Boomers, as noted, don't surface during their deployments (except for supplies, communications, or other special circumstances).  You should assume you'll have NO contact, other than emails, with your sailor during a patrol.

Our personal record with holidays is four years in a row (2006-2009), meaning no contact for four Thanksgivings, December birthdays, or Christmases.  Needless to say, Christmas of 2010 was major league!!!

The random, unpredictable phone calls we've received during a patrol are considered "gifts" (the boat surfaced and sailors were allowed to call)!

Rebecca, I couldn't figure out what you were talking about at first. But I believe you mean boomer. There are fast attacks and boomers and I believe it has to do with the weapons they carry. Also their patrols or under ways are different in how they operate. My hubby was on a boomer in the cold war, our son is on a fast attack.

What does NAM stand for? Keep seeing this and never heard my son mention this. Thank you.

Not every command sends a notification to the parents of a sailor when they receive their dolphins.  I never received anything except a call from my son.
I did receive a letter when he received 1 of his 4 NAMs, but not the other 3. Each command is different.

Kaye- thank you for that informative post! Is anyone here have a son that is on a Bummer? My son is currently on Deployment on the Florida. This is his first Deployment on a Bummer. His 'home' boat is the Alexandria (fast attack). Once before he missed the Holidays, when he was on Deployment on the Alex. Anyway, I was wondering if it might be at all possible that I might have a chance to be able to Skype with him close to Christmas time? I know Bummers go down for 6mns and stay down, for the most part. I was just hoping some of you Ladies or Gentlemen might  tell me some of your experiences with your son's Deployment on a Bummer that happened during the Holidays. -Thanks

baby dukie's mama, my glasses are "offed" read nukie instead of dukie the first time. Thought it was a good name. Don't feel too comfy yet. You know moms will find unexplored ways of feeling guilt for not doing enough at a drop of a hat. :)

Thanks everyone for your help, I've got it all figured out now.  Been in contact with the ombudsman.
